I doubt Mel Brooks intended this but this scene has some historical accuracy.

The logical response to this scene is that the outlaws could easily go around the tollbooth to proceed. Now jump back in time to March of 1836. Santa Anna was delayed for several weeks defeating a small outpost called the Alamo while Sam Houston was busy getting his act together. If Santa Anna had simply bypassed the Alamo, he could have easily defeated the unprepared Sam Houston & Texas would still be part of Mexico.
