I lived in a studio apartment about that size. The one thing I have to say about small homes and small spaces is that they can feel allot bigger than they are if designed to fool the eye into thinking there is more space. One way to do this is larger windows or sky lights (as seen in modern architecture) to essentially meld indoors and outdoors together, giving you the feeling of more space. I would need something like that to live so small.
I think they should add glass or wood doors to all the shelves.so when you move the house stuff does not fall out.I really like the wagon design, it kinda reminds me of the gypsy wagons from fable 2, but it looks like you will have way less head space in the loft :( I guess it doesn't matter if you just sleep up there but what it you want to do some thing more ;D.I would get one for traveling but I don't think I could live in one full time.
@katievhoneychurch Even as the most notorious Kyoto holdout, surely the U.S. isn't alone in their use of major appliances! Though I'd love to know more about this washer-free Australian lifestyle of which you speak, I'm going to guess you're not talking about Sydney, right? But wouldn't even tiny Alice Springs have a laundromat, if just for an occasional tourist? Keen to hear more!
no i live in sydney and even in the inner city noone owns one, even in the apartments we all get on the roof and hang out our clothes.Never met anyone with a dryer.Wahing machines yes, but washer-dryers/dryers no.
i don;t think so the detail and work inside of it and on the outside is completely beautiful - its so liveable - people pay the same amount for a car thats worth little in a number of years.
I'm all for saving money and i could see my self living in a small home but not that small, no way. And for anyone who actually thinks that big homes are ruining the planet... STOP smoking crack because the planet has been here long before we ever were and it will shake us off like a bad case of flees and will be here long after we are all dead.
@DixiePrepper With all respect to you, the late George Carlin, and other climate change deniers, but doesn't this view tend to overlook all the good folks who don't deserve to be "shaken off like a bad case of fleas", nor the thousands of other species we'll take with us? But why bring greenhouse gasses into the dialog at all?
@shadezofgrayfulness global warming has been disproven and you are blind if you don't know it. that is a scam to pass the carbon tax and what ever other taxes that they want to pile on top of our heads.
@DixiePrepper I'd be thrilled if that were true, Dixie, & truly I'm very open to that being the case. But Science, not Fox News, is how we bypass misperceptions from such things as "wishful thinking", "gut instinct" and "availability bias", and I'm kinda goin by that. For instance, in '97 1,500 scientists, including 104 Nobel laureates, urged prompt action on climate change. Check out the IPCC's 4th Assessment if you like. Yea, but soon as somebody farts you gotta clear the place out till the smell goes away. Or if someone takes a dump, you GOTTA let the place air out. Lets be real here folks. Shit STINKS
@o030m27m2o08 Ab-so-LUTE-ly! Why pay someone to write a sonnet for you when it's more satisfying and fun to do it yourself? There's nothing actually WRONG if you're so posh you're hiring it out, provided you have more money than time, but you kinda give away the bragging rights a bit, plus a shload of money. But I like how Dee Williams did hers for about $7000, yeah?
I'm pretty sure Jay's Tumbleweeds are going to pick up a lot of momentum. Here in L.A., at about 6:05 tonight, I heard a short news item on KFI News Radio (AM 640) extolling the benefits of paring down one's life to the essentials and taking up residence in a space under 100 square feet. I didn't catch it all, and it was short, but it was obvious whose little houses they were talking about! Let's face it, they're even cuter than Ellen Page!!!
@yeaimthatdude1 Oh, yeah -- too true! Since trailers are so tacky and un-crafty, they should remain the last refuge of the terminally un-smug. Though "Tumbleweed Trash" is much more alliterative, personally I think these wee houses have something no trailer I've ever seen has. What? Idk... grace, prestige, authority, class, cachet?
@shadezofgrayfulness what is your problem? You are so judgmental of people who live in trailers. Not everyone who lives in a trailer is trailer trash. The only trash I see is you. And by the way, I do not live or know anyone who lives in a trailer so you can not attack me on the aspect of being bias, I'm just what you would call a good person
This is actually one of my dreams to have .. As soon as I turn 18, I am moving out of Manhattan and going to Alabama. Going to buy me some land there and get me a tumbleweed house and live in the good ol' country in the woods.
This is actually one of my dreams to have .. As soon as I turn 18, I am moving out of Manhattan and going to Alabama. Going to buy me some land there and get me a tumbleweed house and live in the good ol' country in the woods.
@Iwatchtrek If you build it on a trailer, the max legal width in 43 states is 8 1/2 ft. and the rest are 8 ft., with Hawaii's regs allowing 9 ft. If space a consideration, I suppose you COULD build it longer, but I'm sure you would want try one on for size first before committing the time and/or money. Who knows? You might like the size just fine!
i plan to build one of these and i found a heating and air unit and it only takes 11 amps and if you go off the grid a 200 watt 16 volt panel will give you 12.5 amps enough to power this and a labtop, lighting and a second one could become for a hydrogen plan i had for water heating if you want to know more message me
This house is how much, recyclecongress? 30,000-50,000? LMAO. You can purchase a 1400 square foot house in El Mirage, Arizona for that price with plumbing, electricity, the work. What a scam.
SCREW the environment! That's not why I would want one of these tiny houses.... well, DID want until I saw the prices. $30,000-50?! WTF? I could get a used mobile home for that. Conclusion: I would buy one if they started at least 65% LESS of their current price. And if I had PROPERTY. Nowadays those of us single, poor folks can't even afford THAT. Other than price, I would definitely live in one to save $ in rent or mortgage, tax and utilities! I would want entirely different bathroom.
I get it, not for you. But for s/one who can't reach the 1st rung of the Property Ladder, there's at least ONE way this might work, even w/ a take-home of only $300/wk.
@CL0v3 Actually, the house is very easy to move. We have quite a few customers who share the home with at least one person. When you believe that the home is just one room of your world and the outside world is the other room, it doesn't seem so small.
Sooooo cute!! Hubby has agreed it would be fun to build one, so I guess we'll see you at one of your workshops :) We love camping, and I used to love my pop-up, but now I have something so much more grand to obsess over. I'll gladly upgrade to one of these, and start planning an earlier retirement for the both of us.
@TumbleweedHouses Maybe in a couple of years :D. Prices of houses in the uk are ridiculous. For a young person this is a very affordable way of living. Jay's a real inspiration.
he is ,ive looked at so many other ways to have a little house [garage conversions, cabins etc] since I love them - only the wooden ones, trailers are hideous. And these tumbleweed types are the only viable way to do it ,everything else requires extensive council approval, lifting the foundations if you want to add plumbing etc, just lots of money/paperwork.I'm looking now for someone in Australia to make me one. Then I'll buy the plans.
Alot of peoples ancestors probably use to all live like this especially those of eastern euro descent. I grew up in a mcmansion and all i ever saw was empty rooms and huge living areas being constantly and i mean constantly cleaned and maintained but rarely used at all,my parents spent any free time shopping. That is not living.
Where do you park these things? And is it possible to get internet in those things? Or is that computer just for office use and not for surfing the web?
@pinoykearo You have a few options for parking a Tumbleweed: in your own yard if the local laws permit, trailer parks, etc. You can have all the internet you can use! Jay has high-speed in his house.
@himel95 I wouldn't presume to know, but I can guess... It's probably not a big, clunky Sealy® Posterpedic, but more likely a comfy memory foam type (which folds, etc.). Maybe a premium futon mattress. Those would be my choices, I think.
@frugalnanny there are a lot of options to which these houses can be supplied with electricity. The same with utilities and other necessary systems for a functional home.
Better check the website to have detailed info on these topics.
@rsslvscff I think it's a fair question. But I'm thinking, if I had a house with a small orchard out back, having a buddy with his camper parked there might sorta cheapen the scene. An Epu, by contrast, looks a bit magical, don't you think? Like a Walt Disney cottage! *MUCH* nicer than an aluminum thang that seems to convey, "In *this* house we drink from jelly jars & keep a can of Raid on the kitchen table!" ;-)
Traditional home ownership: Put $26,000 down on a $260,000 house & by the time it's paid off (in 30 years), pay so much in interest, you could have bought 3 homes.
Alternative: Put $10,000 down on a $100,000 rural lot & use it as a place to build a Tumbleweed. More fun, more economy, less waste. Just thinking out loud.
I'm thinking that the portability of these itsy-bitsy bungalows is reason enough for Jay to refer to the enthusiasm for tiny houses, a "movement", LOL. Either that, or it's because they're SO small, you have to move outside just to change your mind! Just kidding, Jay. I'm really interested in coming to take a closer look at your comfy-looking hermit shell, and have already been looking for a trailer. Is "Epu" Japanese for "please to remove left elbow from right ear"? :-)
2:27 WOW respect man. That's the exact way i think about it! My house is much bigger, but it's a green house, so it has nearly no pollution, almost no water use, everything is ecological about it. Nice to have people who live like that too :D
I love this but I am paranoid about natural disasters especially earthquakes so if a house isn't in the ground with a foundation, I won't be able to sleep at night :(
I guess I'll just have to build my own tiny home.... :D
@spazzing Actually, I think sleeping in a room on wheels would be SAFER, cuz you'd have all the built in seismic protection (ie., shock absorption) of pneumatic tires, springs, and oh yeah -- shock absorbers! ;-) Btw, "Epu" could be an acronym for "Emergency Property Unit", no? Heh. Or "Environmental Perambulating Utopia", maybe?
@shadezofgrayfulness But you could just roll off a hill, triple tumble and fall in a crack! Yeah nonono paranoia isn't gonna let me sleep in peace in these houses. If they built these in the ground then I'll take one haha.
@spazzing Wow, I surrender. In fact, I'm practically converted to your viewpoint. Yup. You've worked long and hard to achieve this level of paranoia, and gosh darnnit, I think it would be a criminal to cheat you out of it! So-o-o, I guess a treehouse is out of the question? JK! :-D
@shadezofgrayfulness Hahaha Well actually I think a treehouse would probably sway with the shaking, unless we're talking like freakin HURRICANETORNADOHELLSTORMTSUNAMIATTACKKK... oh man even a good nuclear bunker can fall into a crack and melt in magma!
I am reeeally looking forward to 2012 cause I'll be prepared...yuuuuuup ;D
I am really impressed. This looks so cozy! But I have to ask Jay, why not smaller? If you think about, who really needs 96 square feet? I understand if this was for a couple, but for only one person? We Americans really need to rethink our conspicuous consumption.
@StoneManly Yeah but how do you know he's not living with someone? Or eventually will? Then he'll have to buy another one and what's gonna happen with this one?
home like these will be the wave of the future...I'm thinking about making a home out of a car hauler and towing it where ever. Car hauler trailer is cheaper than 5th wheel.
But if there's no plumming what about khmm... toilet smell?

Alot of peoples ancestors probably use to all live like this especially those of eastern euro descent. I grew up in a mcmansion and all i ever saw was empty rooms and huge living areas being constantly and i mean constantly cleaned and maintained but rarely used at all,my parents spent any free time shopping. That is not living.

Where do you park these things? And is it possible to get internet in those things? Or is that computer just for office use and not for surfing the web?
pinoykearo 1 year ago
@pinoykearo You have a few options for parking a Tumbleweed: in your own yard if the local laws permit, trailer parks, etc. You can have all the internet you can use! Jay has high-speed in his house.

how would we go about actually purchasing one of these?

how did he fit his bed up there?
himel95 1 year ago
@himel95 I wouldn't presume to know, but I can guess... It's probably not a big, clunky Sealy® Posterpedic, but more likely a comfy memory foam type (which folds, etc.). Maybe a premium futon mattress. Those would be my choices, I think.

@frugalnanny there are a lot of options to which these houses can be supplied with electricity. The same with utilities and other necessary systems for a functional home.
Better check the website to have detailed info on these topics.

@rsslvscff Think of a typical travel trailer and compare it to Jay's Epu, can you easily see the difference? ;>
The Tumbleweed Tiny houses are made of premium materials not to mention the sophistication of details. An exquisite craft from an ingenious mind.

@TumbleweedHouses You are right! Freeing yourself of worry, stress, and debt is a beautiful feeling! Less IS more!
rsslvscff 1 year ago
@rsslvscff I think it's a fair question. But I'm thinking, if I had a house with a small orchard out back, having a buddy with his camper parked there might sorta cheapen the scene. An Epu, by contrast, looks a bit magical, don't you think? Like a Walt Disney cottage! *MUCH* nicer than an aluminum thang that seems to convey, "In *this* house we drink from jelly jars & keep a can of Raid on the kitchen table!" ;-)
shadezofgrayfulness 1 year ago
Traditional home ownership: Put $26,000 down on a $260,000 house & by the time it's paid off (in 30 years), pay so much in interest, you could have bought 3 homes.
Alternative: Put $10,000 down on a $100,000 rural lot & use it as a place to build a Tumbleweed. More fun, more economy, less waste. Just thinking out loud.
shadezofgrayfulness 1 year ago
@shadezofgrayfulness should have more people like you! This is what we are trying to convey to people. ;>
But as they say, living small is not for everybody.
TumbleweedHouses 1 year ago
I'm thinking that the portability of these itsy-bitsy bungalows is reason enough for Jay to refer to the enthusiasm for tiny houses, a "movement", LOL. Either that, or it's because they're SO small, you have to move outside just to change your mind! Just kidding, Jay. I'm really interested in coming to take a closer look at your comfy-looking hermit shell, and have already been looking for a trailer. Is "Epu" Japanese for "please to remove left elbow from right ear"? :-)
shadezofgrayfulness 1 year ago
so awesome. i love the trailer too. wat a perfect camping trailer right. kick your kids out and they can live in their own little house. =] awesome.

Forsure3333 1 year ago
2:27 WOW respect man. That's the exact way i think about it! My house is much bigger, but it's a green house, so it has nearly no pollution, almost no water use, everything is ecological about it. Nice to have people who live like that too :D

waltdisney123 1 year ago
Wow this is cool. But I doubt I could live in one I would have nightmares about sleeping in that room, damn Claustrophobia.
Aroan00001 1 year ago
I love this but I am paranoid about natural disasters especially earthquakes so if a house isn't in the ground with a foundation, I won't be able to sleep at night :(
I guess I'll just have to build my own tiny home.... :D
spazzing 1 year ago
@spazzing Actually, I think sleeping in a room on wheels would be SAFER, cuz you'd have all the built in seismic protection (ie., shock absorption) of pneumatic tires, springs, and oh yeah -- shock absorbers! ;-) Btw, "Epu" could be an acronym for "Emergency Property Unit", no? Heh. Or "Environmental Perambulating Utopia", maybe?
shadezofgrayfulness 1 year ago
@shadezofgrayfulness But you could just roll off a hill, triple tumble and fall in a crack! Yeah nonono paranoia isn't gonna let me sleep in peace in these houses. If they built these in the ground then I'll take one haha.
spazzing 1 year ago
@spazzing Wow, I surrender. In fact, I'm practically converted to your viewpoint. Yup. You've worked long and hard to achieve this level of paranoia, and gosh darnnit, I think it would be a criminal to cheat you out of it! So-o-o, I guess a treehouse is out of the question? JK! :-D
shadezofgrayfulness 1 year ago
@shadezofgrayfulness Hahaha Well actually I think a treehouse would probably sway with the shaking, unless we're talking like freakin HURRICANETORNADOHELLSTORMTSUNAMIATTACKKK... oh man even a good nuclear bunker can fall into a crack and melt in magma!
I am reeeally looking forward to 2012 cause I'll be prepared...yuuuuuup ;D

I wonder, how does he get electricity for all stuff that need it?
erjik 1 year ago
@erjik The houses are built to easily plug electricity. A solar power is also an alternative in off grid settings.
TumbleweedHouses 1 year ago
I am really impressed. This looks so cozy! But I have to ask Jay, why not smaller? If you think about, who really needs 96 square feet? I understand if this was for a couple, but for only one person? We Americans really need to rethink our conspicuous consumption.
StoneManly 1 year ago 14
@StoneManly Yeah but how do you know he's not living with someone? Or eventually will? Then he'll have to buy another one and what's gonna happen with this one?
spazzing 1 year ago
@StoneManly 96 square feet is fair enough to put all necessities into a house.
TumbleweedHouses 1 year ago
@StoneManly What are you, stupid? Try and tell me that you live in a smaller space than that.
