Actually, we have been using Smartboards at our college for 10+ years. The boards and projectors hold up well, the software upgrades are free, the lessons are free, and they are pretty easy to use. A good investment for teachers who want to infuse technology in the content.

smartboards are a huge waste of money right now. You can use all the same software on new projectors without the board at all. Smartboards are 10-15 years behind the curve. Why don't you run out and buy newtons while your at it.

Wouldn't the board hurt your eyes? Backlight is necessary to make it work but it hurts the eyes.

I do not think the technology will be obsolete, hardware is pretty simple, and besides the cost of the board once your school or company owns it you can get the Notebook software for free. It's not the board itself that's magic, it''s SMART Notebook that does wonders. I wonder if the OP still uses that? Looks like a SB585?

The lag is much to great. Writing on those boards is annoying because the line comes approximately 200ms after you draw it. This may not seem much, but it's very disturbing.

I'm really glad you can go back and forth between the boards quickly... Since you can only fit 3 or 4 equations (large enough so everyone can see) on this board.

Please, use a normal blackboard. Students have been learning physics and math for hundreds of years, you don't need to try to use some stupid fancy technology.

First of all: Just because you have multiple pages saved into your computer doesn't mean you can see them all at once on this comparatively small screen. Have you ever been in a physics lecture room? There are anywhere from 4 to 12 chalkboards depending on the size of the room. They stretch all the way across the front of the classroom/lecture hall.

Second: Professors have notes prepared before they come to class. Mine have always been scanned and uploaded to the internet.

the issue isn't technology. the issue is that this particular technology isn't significantly better than what we have now, and is especially worse when considering the cost.

the great thing about basic math and physics is that it doesn't require cutting edge technology to learn it. that's why china and kazakhstan are kicking the US's ass in math.

nevertheless, there's always someone trying to sell something that doesn't help much to bloated organizations.

Where I come from, we still use old school chalkboards. My high school didn't need any high tech boards. It made us pay more attention to what our instructor was writing.

I don't know what's wrong with your district, but these babies run fine at my school. We have these hooked up to a normal projector and a e6400 Core 2 Duo+ EVGA 8600 GT computer, and they run smoothly. Throw in some Senteo remote controls and you have a fully electronic class. Love my Calc class because of it.

Wow, lucky! In my school, its just the advanced classes (Calculus, AP Stats, AP Physics) that get the SmartBoards, and they aren't even from the district. Teachers have to buy them out of their own pockets!

Yes, there is a delay and it is normal. Although it can be a bit awkward at first, one gets used to it pretty quickly.
