  • Good job, I did mine 3 x's and that was part of how I transitioned before I big chopped on 12/07/11, I love those and i got the idea for them from "justcallmevee", she has a whole collection dedicated to genie loc styles (yarn braids), you should check it out. I love your channel, keep up the good work.

  • I love the braids I think. I just may do them this weekend.Thank you!

  • @TheBadbarbie123 i see that you like to experiment with color, genie locs are so easy to do that with, you should try some burgandy or red, you'd like it, if not you can easily take out the red or burgandy and replace it with black

  • love the Q&A

  • Love your gold jewelry...I have a harringbone similar to yours...very nice.

  • love it great job

  • Beautiful!

    They look just like Locs...

  • at 0:58..what is the white stuff through the yarn/braid?

  • @NaturalUzuri913 - that's just your natural hair that shows, it's not really white, it just looks white because of the angle of the camera. search more genie loc/yarn braid tutorials on youtube and you'll see that on all the videos. hope this helps

  • hey

what is the recipe for the moisture like how much cup of aloe Vera juice should i use

  • wwwwwoooowww those look awesome i was feeling really down cause i couldnt find any hair styles that i like with my natural hair this is awesome im really good at braids so this is going to be a piece of cake im going to the store now to get some yarn i will update you on how it went thanks alot

  • Wow they look like real locs. Do you have any videos to how to do singular twists similar to Yaya DaCosta from America's Next Top Model?

  • Can you go swimming with these in?

  • I love your braids!!! But I wanted to ask if these are good to get if my hair does not do well with synthetic hair?

  • Wow, Yarn Braids? Now that's very new for me! They look nice too BBBD!

  • You are so professional and thorough. I completely understood and will be attempting these tomorrow. Thank you, I subscribed.

  • These braids are adorable BBBD!!!

  • I put my braids in a weeks after I saw this video and I Love them! Thanks SO MUCH for this tutorial! :-)

  • this is sooo cute . ..

  • Excellent vid. Did my own version of yarn braids, twing my hair, so just pull to come take them down. Loving them. Thanks for the care tips, found them really useful.

  • blah why doesnt anyone have clear pics of these i want them but only cuz they kind of look like locs i dont want to put them in my hair and they look like regular braids y cant anyone post a clear pic of video of the actual hair >.>

  • @RainiCouture they don't look like regular braids. people can't really tell what they are when you have them. I thought the pic was clear... =\ blackonyx77 has clear pics as well.

  • Did you dip your yarn braids in hot water?

  • Awesome video & Awesome demo at The Nzuri Hair Show in Houston. It was great to see you there!! (2 Thumbs up Nina) :-)

  • This video was really helpful

    Thanks for the tips

  • This was one of the best tutorials. I agree with *Nibbler800*, trying to see the beginning of the braid was difficult, but great video nonetheless! I'm subscribing to your channel.

  • was hair wet while braiding? because my hair is really curly after i wash or cowash

  • Hello BeauBrwnBabyDol,I was wondering if your planning on doing a genie loc removal vid?

  • Who won the contest

  • I love your personality and style! Be blessed! By the way I saw you in the essence mag, congrats!

  • Thanks for this vid. You explain really well and clearly. Only suggestion I have is it would be even better if somehow you could get a close up on the beginning of the braid (at the root) process. Picture is fuzzy when I try to home in & really see what your fingers and the yarn/your hair sections are doing. Thanks again.

  • I used to think you would twist the yarn and not braid them to get the locks look, what's the difference?

  • How do u measure the yarn b4 startn braids or twists???

  • OK, I feel better now. I just did a set of yarn braids to my hair for the first time and I estimated that it took me 15 hours over 3-days. It was probably more like the 17 it took you though. Great job! I'm going to use your method of wrapping the yarn around the hair the next time I do these.

  • hey, is one red heart super saver enough for that length of hair you acquired?

  • I'm in the middle of transitioning so my permed ends are very straight. If I tried to do this style, is there a chance that my ends my not stay in, or they'll be poking out? I had this problem when I did my own braids with braiding hair. I don't no how to seal these dang permed ends in....lol.

  • i'm soooo gonna try this!!!!Thanks

  • the best way i moisturize my hair during protective styling is a mix of jojoba oil, castor oil, almond oil, apricot oil and tea tree oil in a spray bottle.

The best way I moisturize my hair when it is in a protective style is by spraying my hair with my secret mixture of water, conditioner, & any oil of choice.

  • Did you do that all by yourself??

  • I have done yarn braids! I have found for them to not be so bulky... I dipped the braids in hot water and thru lay down a lot better!

  • The way i moisturize is i oil my roots and and rub it up to the ends of my hair and put some type of butter or cream.oh and i spray water.

  • @Superstarveiw I usually do that too.

  • i thought it was gonna be harder then that.this might be my next due

  • @Superstarveiw Mine too :)

  • im definitely gonna consider this! i have to watch this like 10 times so i get it right if i use this style. thx a bunch!

  • Yeah I needed to see these on some big hair. Lol. Beautiful !!

  • i love this style... i might try it :) thanx for the idea... i never new you could braid your hair with YARN lol but a prtectivve style is just wat i need right now... especially now that it's getting cold :) Thanx BabyDoll

  • @PurpleRedKisses I usually press my hair during the colness fo the fall but now that I see this, I may be considering these. My niece had these in before and it looked cool. So all I have to do is let my hair shrink up in order to do the style, even though my hair is near waist length.

  • Have you done this before on your hair? My fear is that it might break your hair off. Isn't that yarn made out of acrylic. I have known acrylic hats to to break peoples hair off along with wool as well. Please share with me how your hair held up in these braids. Thank you.

  • super cute lady! thanks for the video! can't wait to see how you rock them!

  • OMG this is so beautiful.!!!! I am going to have to experiment now.

  • HI does it matter if you twist them instead?? i thinking about trying this, but i have a lot of hair and would rather twist it, have you seen it done with twist? if so does it look like locs as well?

  • OMG Girl! So I'm flipping through this months issue of "Juciy" (bought it cuz Bey baby story on the cover) & 2 my surprise Lo & behold Ms. BBBD is smiling ever so brightly back at me on p55 in an ad for Transition Natural! I was like what??? YOU GO GIRL! :-) So, I hurry 2 YT 2 c if u did a vid on it yet and I come across this AWESOME tutorial! Was gonna do kinky twist in my hair but this idea is even better! Imma rock these braids! Thanks for this and CONGRATS on the feature this month! :-)

  • To moisturize my hair when it is in a protective style I start by doing a good, deep condition before I install the style. I use a heavy moisturizing cream to install the braids or twist. During the time it is in the style, I spray the scalp regularly with a water mixture of aloe vera juice or glycerin, depending on the dews. I seal in this moisture that I sprayed on with an oil. • hey beautiful!! love ur yarn braids did u stretch ur hair before?

  • beautybrownbabydol, you look so much like kimmaytube. how long do the yarn braids last? can they cause your hair to loc?

    02chyna

  • Nina, these yarn braids look amazing! You did that! I couldn't wait to see the video after I saw your picture on Facebook. I'm not fond of braiding or twisting my hair for long periods of time, but I'm def thinking about the yarn braids!

  • I haven't done any protective styling since my BC but when I do get a protective style I plan to use a mist of oils/water mixes and grease my scalp with some sort of moisturizing oil. Possibly coconut oil and shea butter melted :)

  • Will u be in St. Louis soon? If so will u do these for me? If not who would u recommend in STL to do these and not damage my hair. I am natural as well.

  • I love to moisturize every other day with kimmaytube's leave in conditioner...It does wonders to my hair

  • I so want to do yarn braids but always chicken out. It's great to see you do them since I've always wondered who someone with LOTS of hair would fare. Thanks for sharing :)

  • How long does your hair need to be, I just bc'd a couple months ago and my hair is like 1-2 in

  • These look fab! Would you ever loc your real hair?

  • do these braids catch lint a lot? I wondered about that since it's made with wool and my wool sweaters often catch lint or development those wool balls on them.

  • @anyaposh wool yarn is not used for yarn braids, it will lock to your hair and become difficult to remove. most people use acrylic yarn.

  • Is it a certain type of yarn use just for hair?? I heard that yarn can pull your hair out from all the different styling and it can cause breakage. I have always liked the look of these braids but i am not for certain on the method.

  • @NaturalSunshyne23 The best yarn I've heard for this style is always Red Heart Super Saver acrylic yarn. Using wool yarn will cause your hair to loc. Any braided or twisted styles (with yarn, real hair, or synthetic hair) can cause damage and breakage if not cared for properly. You have to make sure they are not done too tight and wear the braids or twists for a day or two before styling. HTH!

  • you make doing hair soooo easy. I feel empowered to do this style myself. Thanks

  • Love it!!!!

  • i finished mine a few days ago and I love them too!! yours are much shorter than mine but gorgeous just the same!!

  • I love those braids but dont think i might have the patience for them but after seeing the price to have a pro do them!!! I think i might just have to do them myself! Lol

  • how many packs of yarn did you use? And how long did it take you?

  • Thanks so much! Can't wait to try these...

  • Okay I loved everything actually thinking about doing these on someone. But a question I have is lent. Since its cotton will it get very lenty quickly ??? cause I'm planning on doing these on a 6 year who loves rolling on carpet. Thanks in advance

  • @MIsszNita It's best to use acrylic yarn. I didn't have a problem with lint when I've worn them but, of course, I'm not 6 and I don't roll around on carpet. You may want to put a scarf on to protect the hair when at home.

  • I use a similar method with jamaican bulk afro kinky hair over my starter locs... I think i may try yarn as well and see what happens.. Great tutorial

  • When people ask about your hair is it EMBARRASSING for you to tell them it yarn?

  • @missclassyncute1 I was never embarrassed to. Besides, you don't HAVE to tell them it's yarn. Most won't know.

  • Hello! I have hair that is soft... what people call "good hair" or "grease and water hair" (eye roll) but maybe a tad finer that urs with a loosser curl pattern. i find my hair doesnt stay well synthetic; the ends tend to come out of the hair. did u ever have this problem and will mosturizing my hair with the yarn braids cause it to slide out of the yarn? Alot i know, but I'd hate to waste my money again. thnx for ur time and ur videos.

  • Thank you for doing this tutorial! I actually understand how to do this and feel that I could do it myself. You are so very talented!

  • I have a question... I see a lot of naturals doing the yarn braids rather than using synthetic hair...why? What is the added benefit? Doesn't the yarn make your head itch?

  • @CLanesiuc lol....no itching. Its not so much the "benefit" as the look. Its frugal, creative and looks a bit more natural. Like locs.

  • @BeautifulBrwnBabyDol Okay, I see. I was just wondering because I never even knew yarn braids existed until just about a year ago. They look very nice on you.

  • Good video. I love the bubble captions, that was a good idea.
