To moisturize my hair when it is in a protective style I start by doing a good, deep condition before I install the style. I use a heavy moisturizing cream to install the braids or twist. During the time it is in the style, I spray the scalp regularly with a water mixture of aloe vera juice or glycerin, depending on the dews. I seal in this moisture that I sprayed on with an oil. I haven't done any protective styling since my BC but when I do get a protective style I plan to use a mist of oils/water mixes and grease my scalp with some sort of moisturizing oil. Possibly coconut oil and shea butter melted :)

I so want to do yarn braids but always chicken out. It's great to see you do them since I've always wondered who someone with LOTS of hair would fare. Thanks for sharing :)
do these braids catch lint a lot? I wondered about that since it's made with wool and my wool sweaters often catch lint or development those wool balls on them.

Is it a certain type of yarn use just for hair?? I heard that yarn can pull your hair out from all the different styling and it can cause breakage. I have always liked the look of these braids but i am not for certain on the method.
@NaturalSunshyne23 The best yarn I've heard for this style is always Red Heart Super Saver acrylic yarn. Using wool yarn will cause your hair to loc. Any braided or twisted styles (with yarn, real hair, or synthetic hair) can cause damage and breakage if not cared for properly. You have to make sure they are not done too tight and wear the braids or twists for a day or two before styling. HTH!
I love those braids but dont think i might have the patience for them but after seeing the price to have a pro do them!!! I think i might just have to do them myself! Lol
I keep my protective styles moisturized with coconut oil and SM style milk if in twist. If braided I use a oil spray mixed with jojoba oil and castor oil. Facebook: Sha-Keeba R Hudson. Twitter: LuvNatuarlly09.
are yarn braids ok to do on relaxed hair, i want to transition again but be a longterm transitioner and i really hope that i can do this style,i never see tutorials on relaxed hair.
I love yarn braids. Ive been doing them for over a year on my daughters hair. I just did my first install on myself last week! Love them as a protective style!
Hi there my best way to moisturize when my hair is in a protective style like cornrows because sometimes I do wear a wig to give my hair a break is every night before I go to bed I used "Milk Protein & Olive Oil" then I put on a silk hair bonnet. Okay I loved everything actually thinking about doing these on someone. But a question I have is lent. Since its cotton will it get very lenty quickly ??? cause I'm planning on doing these on a 6 year who loves rolling on carpet. Thanks in advance
@MIsszNita It's best to use acrylic yarn. I didn't have a problem with lint when I've worn them but, of course, I'm not 6 and I don't roll around on carpet. You may want to put a scarf on to protect the hair when at home.
I use a similar method with jamaican bulk afro kinky hair over my starter locs... I think i may try yarn as well and see what happens.. Great tutorial
Also i forgot to mention that my friend was trying to do her own yard braids out for the first time and they came out really nice. It made me become more interested in it. After watching your video I really feel like doing this now. Thanks so much this video was very helpful. :)
To moisturize i use ORS Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion and/or Lustrasilk Right On Curl Activator Moisturizer and add in ORS Jojoba Oil or Olive Oil to my hair.
To moisturize, I create a mix with water and hot six oil, which has like a bunch of natural oils in it, put it in a spray bottle and spritz my scalp daily! :-D
the way i moisturize when i have a protective style is by spritzing my hair with a mixture of water evoo, coconut oil, amla and tea tree oil. great stuff. after which i seal it all in with wave by design finishing lotion.
Currently my hair is in two strand twist (no added extensions). I moisturize daily with my mixture of (water, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, vegetable glycerine and alternate sealing between coconut oil, sheabutter mixture and almond oil)
Didn't you say you're moving to TX? If you are anywhere near Houston, please let me know because I would love for you to do my hair. You still do hair, right?

Hello! I have hair that is soft... what people call "good hair" or "grease and water hair" (eye roll) but maybe a tad finer that urs with a loosser curl pattern. i find my hair doesnt stay well synthetic; the ends tend to come out of the hair. did u ever have this problem and will mosturizing my hair with the yarn braids cause it to slide out of the yarn? Alot i know, but I'd hate to waste my money again. thnx for ur time and ur videos.
I have a question... I see a lot of naturals doing the yarn braids rather than using synthetic hair...why? What is the added benefit? Doesn't the yarn make your head itch?
@BeautifulBrwnBabyDol Okay, I see. I was just wondering because I never even knew yarn braids existed until just about a year ago. They look very nice on you.

@quillwritesright ok for real!!!! When I did these myself I did larger sections and I did twists not braids because I didnt want it to take forever and a day.
The best way to moisturize your hair while in a protective style is to have a good spray that's not too heavy. For example, I use coconut oil, jojoba oil, a cheap conditioner, and water.
can you share the devices to burn if you find any details.... I've always hated using a lighter :( but great video! I've never seen yarn braids done and they look so good. I thought you had locs at first!
To moisturize my hair I use castor oil and coconut oil on my scalp when I have my hair in a protective style... (FB: Cashay Clayborn / Twitter: @cclayborn)
Very nice. Ive read reviews before that wool based yarns will "loc" when washed, and some will bleed their colors. The brand you showed is actually the brand I always see suggested for yarn braids.

Is it a certain type of yarn use just for hair?? I heard that yarn can pull your hair out from all the different styling and it can cause breakage. I have always liked the look of these braids but i am not for certain on the method.
NaturalSunshyne23 4 months ago
@NaturalSunshyne23 The best yarn I've heard for this style is always Red Heart Super Saver acrylic yarn. Using wool yarn will cause your hair to loc. Any braided or twisted styles (with yarn, real hair, or synthetic hair) can cause damage and breakage if not cared for properly. You have to make sure they are not done too tight and wear the braids or twists for a day or two before styling. HTH!

Hi there my best way to moisturize when my hair is in a protective style like cornrows because sometimes I do wear a wig to give my hair a break is every night before I go to bed I used "Milk Protein & Olive Oil" then I put on a silk hair bonnet. My Facebook name is "C'nique Dunn-Deal" and my Twitter name is "Uniqueisnique" That's also my email address uniqueisnique@live.com.

Okay I loved everything actually thinking about doing these on someone. But a question I have is lent. Since its cotton will it get very lenty quickly ??? cause I'm planning on doing these on a 6 year who loves rolling on carpet. Thanks in advance
MIsszNita 4 months ago
@MIsszNita It's best to use acrylic yarn. I didn't have a problem with lint when I've worn them but, of course, I'm not 6 and I don't roll around on carpet. You may want to put a scarf on to protect the hair when at home.

When people ask about your hair is it EMBARRASSING for you to tell them it yarn?
missclassyncute1 4 months ago
@missclassyncute1 I was never embarrassed to. Besides, you don't HAVE to tell them it's yarn. Most won't know.

To moisturize, I create a mix with water and hot six oil, which has like a bunch of natural oils in it, put it in a spray bottle and spritz my scalp daily! :-D

CLanesiuc 4 months ago
@CLanesiuc lol....no itching. Its not so much the "benefit" as the look. Its frugal, creative and looks a bit more natural. Like locs.

The best way to moisturize your hair while in a protective style is to have a good spray that's not too heavy. For example, I use coconut oil, jojoba oil, a cheap conditioner, and water.
