I gotta say that you are amazingly good for this being your first time I am ranked the top 10 cellist in the world...and im only 19...I wasn`t even that good when i started... woweee...:)
I started with the violin too! when I was 3... then I watched hilary and jackie and decided to learn the cello. Now I'm tilting more towards the cello side because it sounds warmer and the instrument is of a really huggable size \o/
hahahahah!!! I did the same thing. I've been playing violin for 7 years and I bought a cello for fun. I've been playing celli for about 3 years but I only take lessons once a month.
playing the cello like the violin's going to seriously mess you up later on.. that aside it was decently in tune :) I would recommend that you do not start with Bach, the notes are not particularly difficult but it takes a good grasp of the instrument to "perform" the suites. I think the Prelude from Suite No.1 in G is around RCM level 8..
Lol good for you:P I play the violin as well, started in 6th grade and I'm in 8th grade now, would've started earlier but we never had an orchestra program until I was in 6th grade -.- I have a couple videos of me playing my violin btw:P Lol anyways.. I just bought a cello, too! ^^ I can play a couple pieces and I learned them on my own, too:P lol we're awesome for playing the violin but buying a cello anyways :P
@defcut99, I agree , she has too know another instrument , because theres no way you learn that in the sec day, the firs week you learn how too hold your bow, and learn the strings hahaha notes haha
You did a pretty good job from what I can tell. I play both the violin and the cello. As soon as you get used to switching back and forth it will be easier.
im not quite sure but i think you might be holding the bow wrong. the way theyre held is a lot different than violins but then again im not quite sure how to hold a violin xD
.... There are different ways to hold cello or violin bows? Then again I know nothing about those string instruments... I'm a woodwind but it's always fascinating finding out about other sections. =D
i play cello, your thumb goes on the part where there is a nook between the little nook and therest of your fingers relax and bend a little to the left
give her a break people. it is possible for someone to pick up a piece after a couple of days if they already have a partial idea of what to do. if she's got this far in two days - good for her! i started playing again 9 months ago and have got to suzuki grade three by hard work and perserverence. well done emily i believe you! :)
maybe it's asking a lot, but if you really want to learn how to play the cello properly you should do a cello grip. The grip your using now is stiffer and makes the cello sound worst. If you search on youtube you'll find losts of ways to hold the bow the cello way. Well done!!
It is Bouree I from Bach's third cello suite. Just do a serch for that and 'sheet music', and you will get a lot of optios (to download free / buy a book etc). Some publishers are better than others, but I am not sure which is best - again the internet will know.
That video was the day after I got my cello (the second day). i ahve been playin it for about two years, not, but haven't been playing as much lately because I do a lot of sports (I was recovering from an injury when I got it!).
I did play violin before this for 20 years though.
I also play the fiddle but have recently found and fell in love with the cello. You are way better than me but check out my videos if you have the time. Your soulmate,
well i switched to cello too and one thing is C for cello on the left hand ik its hard but it looked like u were holding a violin just cup ur left hand more and remember C for cello
Your pinky should be curved around the frog pf the bow. Also, it looks like you are leaning the neck of the cello on your shoulder. The only place it should be touching you is your knees on either side, near the C-bouts, and the top of the body should rest on your chest. Also, on the left hand you should use "hanging weight" on the fingers and really curve into the pinky to give it more strength, as the first finger is naturally strong. Best of luck, I'm a beginner myself!
Do you have any advice? Im on my third day as a cellist, originally a violin and guitar player. Not to brag, but I learned how to play le cygne from carnival of the animals. Do you have any tips?
Oh, and this is going to sound really uppity, but I'm twelve :)
I have been playing the swan too. I have been a bit too busy to record / post videos with rowing / riding / work / cycling lately.
Tips though - play with your left hand in a shape that could hold a satsuma in it (a kinda curved bridge - don't let it collapse). Try to relax and use the weight of your arms to press into the strings rather than being tense. HTH
I don't think it is uppity saying you are 12 - I could play about 15 instruments when I was that age (to a degree).
hey, actually i was thinking of leaarning the cello too and im a violin player. how old are you and was it easy switching?? do you think its possible to be good at it if you start at 13??
It is a bit weird switching, because some of the things that you would instinctively do are just wrong. If you are only 13 though I think you would definitely be able to get good. I was 26 when I started! I haven't posted anything for ages but I should because I have been having lessons for a while now and have improved a lot.
i started when i wos thirteen too (not too long ago... this summer actually)it wos easy for me though. my bro wos a cellist and he always barked at me for doing the wrong things :/ XD the tricky thing is yur third finger isnt yur third finger :O the fourth finger is like your third finger cus on sum of the strings yur third finger is like a sharp instead of another note. and then on the other strings your second finger is a flat note instead of a new note. very complicated for me, a violinist XD
u wud b fine starting cello @ 13 im 12 and started last year and im ok it wnt be tha that hard if u have the money i recomend private lessons along with school orchestra i didnt have enough so i ended up ok
You have run into the same problem i did when I started learning the cello (i am a violinist) which is the bow hand. Make sure you do the exact opposite you would normally do on the violin, bring fingers closer and keeping your hand more open, I have watched your later vids and your bow hand is all you really need to fix it will make playing easier. Good job though!
whoo, you can't go wrong with bach's 3rd suite. your left hand is used to being curved toward you like on the violin. on cello, the left hand fingers are supposed to be a little more perpendicular with the strings. Your right hand wrist and fingers can be a little more loose and flexible. I have PAGES of notes written on this Bouree I from the 3rd suite if you want you can message me or something. disgustingly awesome job for the 2nd day of practicing
Thanks for you helpful comments :) Any advice you have is very welcome. I have had a few lessons since this (althouh haven't been practising enough because I have been busy rowing and riding!!), and I am currently working on the sarabande from this suite. So any notes you have would be great.
im no cello player, but playing like that on your SECOND day on any instrument is great in my book! wow, you must really have a gift for music. im sure youll pick everything up really quickly.
just out of curiosity, how long had you been playing the violing before getting the cello?
Thanks for uploading this. Good to know it isn't easy even for real musicians. I'm still not sure I'll ever be able to stretch my fingers that far though....
I'm impressed. Well, ok, I was annoyed & dismayed because I got my first cello today and there is no way I'll be playing like that tomorrow. Then I read you've been playing violin for 20 years. (I haven't played violin since 1980. Always wanted to play cello but I was too afraid I'd get my ass kicked. Celli were bully magnates where I'm from.)
Yeah, I have been playing violin for twenty years :)
And I can play (to a low standard), recorder, piano, flute, mandolin, guitar - probably others too. I learned to read music before I learned to read, so when I was a kid, I used to just play any instrument I could get my grubby paws on!!
that's in 2 days?? If you didn't already play violin I'd never have believed it... your bow hold is very much like a violinist though... with cello bow hold, the fingers are much closer to each other... watch a few vids. of famous cellists to get an idea of what I mean..
you are holding the bow like a violinist would, for obvious reasons :)
i do the same thing, being a violist who switched to cello
on cello, you let your fingers hang over the stick more. if you feel like you're about to drop the bow, you're doing it right :D
the looser grip allows the sound to be more fluid and lets you put more weight into the bow too
hope that helps!
