  • I love that golden rule

  • Great explanation! I play bass and I wanted to show a beginner guitarist friend of mine what a tritone sub is and how it works (of course I was showing him on bass guitar...didn't work out so well). Your video is probably the clearest explanation of tritone subs for guitarists on youtube!

  • Dear Justin all this stuff is brilliant and is there a possibility that you can show us how to solo using "swing feel"..bcs i find that a bit confusing tks.

  • "If it sounds good, it is good, and if it sounds shit, it is shit."

  • Thnks for the lesson Justin. But i got a question at 4:39 when showing the chords y did u use only 3 notes leavin 1 out since 7 chords are 4 notes?

  • @Thisaintjonas The note he's leaving out is the fifth. The most important notes of a chord are the root, the 7th and the 3rd. Those are the notes that really define the chord.

  • well explained Justin

interesting fingering on the m7s, it suits well for the movement

  • Hey dude you play great, I was having a difficult time understanding tritone subs. From your video I definetly have a better understanding though I'm not quite there yet.I am trying to open up some new doors in my playing, Incorporating passing notes trying substitutions, I have been working out tunes from the real book for years but have only kept it simple, tune up 2-51 changes playing and changing keys in one position, and some songs off the great kind of blue.looking forward to your videos

  • Great lessons. Congratulations. Thank you. Saludos desde Cancún México.

  • I'm at a very basic level where guitar is concerned but Im pretty accomplished in piano, which i discovered makes it easier for me to learn guitar. this lesson gave me alot of insight since im trying 2 refine my playing by ear(piano) by introducing jazz chords. thanks alot (Y)

  • cramming to finish a homework assignment, turn to youtube for help = win. thanks a bunch, mate. very clear tutorial.

    Great lesson

  • Note the mushie tatoo!!!

    Great lesson

  • Nice way of explaining the issue with the 11th (vs #11) on a tritone substitution. Now I get it.

  • is it just me or is his 12th fret inlay glowing?

  • if it sounds shit it is shit. maybe my gf is right about my playing

  • Just another grateful student. Thanks for all the videos.

  • these videos save me so much meaningless searching on the web. thanks justin!

  • you are a great teacher and very enjoyable to listen to!

  • you remind me of my old guitar teacher lol

  • thanks, even though I don't play jazz guitar this was highly informative

  • Justin. You are the man!

    Oh happy =)

  • A+ thanks

  • You are a very good teacher, dawg

  • "Mumbo jumbo Jazz", sounds cool, SP not giving us close ups, some of us are slow learning dude, and like seeing your fret board. Speaking of which what has happened to modes DVD is it out soon, or will it be available as download. Good idea pruducts downloads? Will there be a complete guitar learning ebook down load too, hopefully some day soon. Maybe something real "slick".

  • hey justin, i think what you are doing is really great and has helped me a long way. i was wondering if you could do a vid on jazz soloing along the line, or if u cud just share how you started soloing in jazz. did you start soloing just using the basic scale patterns, or did you already know all the notes on the fretboard?

  • remember kids, if it sounds good it is good. if it sounds shit, it is shit

  • Thank you so much Justin,

I can actually thumb over on that G7 tritone,

can actually use it for songs for my band.

You taught me how to play guitar

and when I can't seem to find anything creative fills of ideas,

I can always watch your videos for inspiration or just simply

    learn now things!

    Thanks for all your help!

  • Glad you're back to the roots. You excel as a teacher!!!!

  • He keeps laughin... Its like he can see through my monitor and see the look on my face...

  • What a great lesson. I can't even imagine having this much theory in my head. The fact that you can grab what appears to be virtually any chord without even thinking about it is amazing. Thanks for all the hard work you put into these lessons. By the way I purchased Small Town Eyes from Itunes great job! I like it!

  • Wow. So every time I look at a functioning dominant now, I'm going to visual the 7th mode (altered scale/superlocrian) of the melodic minor scale on it, and further, visualize ALL of the modes of the melodic minor scale on top of it as well (one for example would be lydian dominant). Idk how the harmony between the melodic minor scale and the major scale would mesh in this situation- but it's another idea that Justin has sparked.

  • Hi Justin,

Not only are you showing us interesting and really valuable stuff but you are a great teacher. Thanks a lot!

  • Diggin' the Neil Young t-shirt. Sick lesson as well! Probably the best guitar teacher on Youtube.

  • Absolutely outstanding! Thank you.

  • Thx again Justin.

  • "If it sounds good, it is good. If it sounds shit, it is shit!" Always true.

  • If it sounds good, it sounds good! If it sounds shit! Well It Sounds SHIT =) Damn true!

  • Thanks for this lesson, Justin! I didn't understand everything but I'll start figure it out...

    Greetings, Dimi

  • what a sound...

  • this was really helpful

I was wondering if you would cover this

    thank youuu!

  • Yeah .. at 5:25, you kind of went all Charlie Brown's Teacher on me, but I'm going to try to find it in my music theory book. =) Excellent tutorial as usual. Very few people go beyond beginner lessons and a few riffs on YT, but you're truly teaching guitar on all levels.

    Cheers.

  • @Stratomacaster hahaha true i know some basic thoery but got lost as well

  • Nice Tone

  • great quality on the camera, great lesson!

  • Love the Jazz lesson series

  • my brain... ouch... Great lesson dude!!!

  • Hey Justin, thanks for technique and chord lessons! When do you plan on doing more songs?

  • thenk you. your guitar sounds great.

  • you're such a great teacher!

Thanks for all you give to the community!

  • Thanks Justin,nice lesson.

  • Thanks For the lesson Justin.

  • Let's face it, when it comes down to it, this kind of theory is just about numbers - relationships between notes - there's nothing really difficult about modes - you just start on a different degree of the parent scale and the tonal centre changes - the jargon [lydian dominant, superlocrian] etc are just words. Unfortunately , a lot of people love jargon in that they love to dazzle the non-initiated with it. I am a doctor am surrounded by jargonphiles constantly. Don't let it put you off.

  • Justin thank you so much!

You're helping me every lesson to gain so much theory & new stuff

    keep posting jazz lessons!!!

  • The only thing I like about jazz are the chords. Sadly, a lot of the 'jazz' people in my area seem to play is the 'theory' driven jazz. The kind that will say 'but here's this theory that says that it's musically sound!' Too bad it just sounds bad :(.

    This is great stuff though!

  • nice lesson J!

Sorry to bother you with this, but is it possible for you to do a lesson on "Texas Flood" by the great SRV ?

  • Awesome vid justin, makes me want to play jazz :) "aah happy"- bit was epic btw

  • Great Lesson

    More Jazz!

  • Not into jazz (yet) but I love theory to this degree. Great video!

  • this is a nice way of explaining it to guitarists *thumbs up*

  • "oh happy..."

    Really nice man!

    Your vids are great. :D
