Maybe 3% of the worlds population has ever played hockey so the players in the NHL are just the best of that 3%. Many current NHL players would not be good enough to play pro if more people played. Where a sport like basketball has been played by a large percent of the world making the players in the NBA a higher caliber of athlete. Golf is also only played by a small percent of the world but even if every one in the world played golf I couldn't imagine a player being better than Tiger Woods.
