I don't believe there was any conspiracy. Bruce Ismay put pressure on the Captain to run the engines full steam. No binoculars in the tower and a calm sea all came together to made the perfect disaster.
@lostindiancamp well it was cold out and ether with the binoculars the lookouts still would have warned them to late. And Bruce Ismay did not force the captain to go full speed the ship actully remanded at 21 knots captain Smith knew they would arrive on time and keep the engines at 21 knots to run in the engines
Instead of steering away from the ice berg they steered right into it. The truth has finally come out and the Capt. is the biggest fool in history. Next to G W Bush of course. I guess you can say that Smith pulled a Bush on that turn. Ha ha ha...
Can u imagine what we would find if we scan the entire ocean floor across the entire planet?...think about it..we would find more ships..small boats..planes..missing people..treasures all kinds of stuff
it would have stayed afloat if Captain smith listened to the Ice Warnings!!!! plus the Rudder was too small for that size ship, the Olympic even had problems she had her side hit luckily it was above the waterline and the Olympic could not turn away from the HMS Hawke it was too small of a rudder
@bigkevcxza The problem with Smith was that he was too popular, did you know that on April 14, rather than being on the bridge, Smith was in the dining saloon with the Thayers? Right after the dinner party he went straight to sleep, leaving Murdoch to man the ship. As sad as it is, and as much as i wouldn't want to say anything bad towards his memory, Cpt. Smith was not a good captain to begin with. His ego seemed to get in the way of his job. And there were hundreds of other engineering fails.
@TheTrianonmusic@TheTrianonmusic there is no evidence to suggest that Capt Smith went to sleep. He went to his room, but was more than likely in the chart room which is right next to his sitting room at the time of the disaster. Yes, he did have an ego, and he was popular, and there were a TON of things that could have been done that weren't on this voyage, but Capt Smith was simply doing what every captain would have done at the time unfortunately.
@TheTrianonmusic with a ship like Titanic, no one ever thought in a million years that they would have to be as vigilent as history tells us, they should have been.
@bigkevcxza A rudder too small? The ships rudder cant be bigger, that would cost too much time for turning it over, leading to less manouverability...And smith did not ignore the ice warnings, the important warnings where'nt even sent to him, as the guys at the wireless tried to work without interruptions, sending messages of passengers
@andromedarr agree on both points. I don't like how at times the crew, captain, and builders of the titanic are scrutinized. they did evrthg they were supposed to do and in the end most went down with the ship. and modern tests of titanic deem it to be strongly built and well designed for the time
I have read a lot about how the Olympic and Titanic have been considered technological marvels. Its hard to see how this could be so. They were the largest liners ever built, but that was an attribute that was changing hands often in that pre-war ocean liner construction boom.
Just weeks after the tragedy of the sinking, Germany's Hamburg-America Line launched the Imperator. Being the first liner to exceed 50,000 tons, as well as the first to exceed 900 feet in length, the new German liner made an even bigger statement, to say nothing of her staggering 4,595 passenger capacity.
As far as there engines, Olympic and Titanic were powered by triple expansion, reciprocating steam engines. Though these engines were of gargantuan size, they could hardly be considered
leading edge technology, especially for the liners being as large and as important as they were. Most new liners, by 1912, were fitted with much more efficient, steam turbine engines.
People have also marveled at the fact the both ships were fitted with watertight compartments. Watertight compartmentation was certainly not new technology by 1912. Such technology had been around since the 1840's. The first use of the automatic watertight doors had been used in the German liners of the late 19th century.
The one area that the two White Star liners were technologically advanced
was in their construction. This was the first time the two largest ships, were built side by side at the same yard. Untill 1909, the building of sister ships, had usually been farmed out to separate yards. The Lusitania and Mauritania, for example, were built at separate yards.
The Lusitania, was built at the John Brown yards in Glasgow, while here sister was built at the Swan Hunter yards in Newcastle. No matter what though, they were marvelous liners.

not all in life are size and horsepowers , olympic probe to be a great ship even in war , and with 15000 horsepower less , can travel at 23knots , the lusitania at that moment was limited for economy and lack of personel at 21knots , titanic has better propellers desing and if not sink , i believe was faster than the olympic .
The fastest speed that the Olympic achieved durring the war was 22.5 knots when she rammed a U-Boat. Titanic had the exact same design of propellers as the Olympic. Though they had impressive atributes, their were far more advanced ships around.
The turbine is not better in all aspects than a piston engine , they waste energy . A turbo piston engine is a more efficient combination , this is the titanic equipment .
The lusitania reverse with two astern turbines , no full power reverse , less than 50% acting on two center proppellers . Lusitania was financed by government , to be a fast ship , to put 6 turbines , boilers and coal , to achieve more than 25 knots . if lusitania strike titanic iceberg at the same speed , and open 1/3 of her lenght to sea ? . if a modern ship strike an iceberg in the same way ? . lusitania sink in 18 minutes , britannic in 55 .
Really, I guess you do learn something every day. From what I gathered the doors where closed after the explosion from the mine/torpedo. I though it sunk in 2 hours, well, not really. An article said that.
How do we know that it sunk in 55 minutres? Survivors? Same with the Lusitania. Was it really 18 minutes?
the olympic and titanic , have a consumption of 650 ton of coal per day , at the same speed , the lusitania burn 1000 ton of coal , and has 30000 ton less of weight , in titanic the exhaust gases from the reciprocating engines power a low pressure turbine , acting as energy saver like a turbo and the reciprocating engines can be reversed at full power , lusitania need two smaller turbines to reverse .
Titanic was the most beautiful ship of the world , and the most advanced for the time , lusitania and imperator are record breakers , and ineficcient desings . only normandie can compare .
titanic was 1/4 of knot faster than the olympic , and can achieve 59000 horsepower at 83 rpm , she ran at 78 rpm the night of the collision , at this rpm , the ship can travel at 22.7 knots . titanic not was identical than the olympic in all respects , the center proppeller for example , maybe a three blade one . titanic was a ship of 24-25 knots of speed .

Olympic and Titanic had about 15,000 less horse-power than their Cunard rivals
while tipping the scales at over 15,000 tons heavier. Even if the White Star Line was not
aiming for the speed race, Olympic and Titanic could have still been fitted with the more efficient steam turbine technology.
