  • I'm looking to put the Spirit-R engine and tranny in a 93; any ideas where I can get it? also, I need a Mazda Speed A-spec bumper and rear wing; any ideas would be appreciated

  • oh wow a rx7 fd has always been my top dream car (above lambos, ferraris, and everything) because it's has such a beautiful body style and the rotary engine is a amazing feat for such a tiny thing to put out so much power, and if i managed to somehow get my hands on a spirit r, especially a type a i would probably be the happiest 18 year old alive :)

  • Excellent performance from a stock car. No complaints from me at all. The Spirit R Type A is a great car from factory. I think it's smart that you did your reliability upgrades yet still kept it practically stock. This car is definitely a collectors item since it's the last of the RX7's and the Type A. I am curious as to what number off the line you got.

  • If this was my car I would have put it in a glass-box in my livingroom!

  • gt5 producers should watch this wind noise not very loud tyre squeel bumpy tracks loud engine noise car vey planted steering heavy in comparison to most games.

  • Nicely driven.....the poor porsche's didnt know what hit them!! I drove mine with no mods for a long time, and its like being a traffic terrorist.....no noise at all, and suddenly this bullet flies by and they never heard it coming...lol!! My friend ed has a spirit and believe it or not a 110s in pristine condition!!

    Go Rotors!

  • Awesome driving! Please put a piece of masking tape over your camera's mic next time to reduce the wind noise - it's ruining an otherwise stellar vid.

  • Good video, nice video stand. Great car :)

  • I'm trying to figure out how to finance one of these as its my fravourite car period.

  • I have one, on my rego certificate it says it weighs 1227kg

  • I know the weight of this car is about 1270 kg (2794 lbs), but what is the engines true power output? It has to be more than 280 hp, surely?

  • Well it's 'Stock' with 266hp. With some ECU tuning, new intake, exhaust, and downpipe you could get 320hp pretty easily.

  • I thought the spirit r had 280ps? I know the uk rx7 of 1999 had 265 hp.

Still, i think the RX7 is the most beautiful car ever! Id love one but over in the uk everyone chavs them up!

  • what do u mean by chavs?

  • Do a search on here for chav and hopefully u will get the jist!!! I meant that they put ridiculous body kits on cars to make them look better, when in fact they just look serious shite!

  • US Spec RX-7's from 93-95 dyno'd around 220-240hp at the wheels.... and they were rated at 255hp. figure in about a 7% drivetrain loss from 255 and you'll see that the US specs were a little underrated, but thats debatable since back then each manufacturer had a different way in measuring power.

the 96-98 had little difference in power... boost was raised from 10psi to 12psi.

in 99-02 power was increased using a more efficient twin-turbo setup, pushing 14psi and a faster 16bit ecu

  • didnt the 96 get the revised 16 bit ecu also?

  • No. Only the Spirit R and the Type RZ.

  • think they did man!!

  • @therealpodge nope.

look under the hood of pre 99 FD's and they dont have the "black box" vacuum block that the 99-02's have..... this black box is indicative of having the 16bit ECU.

  • True. The power for the Type R and Spirit-R was kinda underrated, too. They said it made 276HP (280PS), but that was only to comply with the Gentlemen's Agreement in Japan which limited the horsepower to that. This car produced 320 HP stock. Reminds me of the Skyline R-34 GTR V-Spec, which produced 330 HP.

  • @rotor13 The last series still ran at 12psi. The 96-98 series did have more power than the 93-95 cars.

  • very nice car and driving.

my ultimate goal would be to own one of these. haha, but i don't see it possible as i live in the US.

hope yours is still doing well, and will last a very long time.

  • im so jealous i want that car.

  • nice driving yo . i wish i also have the spirit r type a . its so freaking perfect . its like japan's ken / iori of car . haha watever . anyway i onli own a type rz . if i got the chance , i would go nsw n have a nice track day wif ya . cheerz mate

  • awesome car mate, take good care of her

  • he better cus i heard they only made 1500 of those and only in japan.

  • i am so jealous of yur spirit r. i have yet to find one. could yu direct me into where i might purcase one ???

  • haha i saw this legendary car for sale with an asking price of 75000 usd

  • was the radiator stock too?

  • yeah everything stock except the things listed on the video

  • have you done any " reliability " mods to the car? Also, how many miles are on the motor? sorry for asking so many questions but you don't see stock fd rx7's.

  • the only reliability mod is I replaced the "AST" (Air separator tank) from the factory plastic one which tends to crack, to a metal one. I've just ticked over 40,000kms ;)

  • Great car! I Love it. How hard was it finding one of the Type A's to buy? Thinking about it as my next car.

  • Exactly what I was about to say.

  • 1.10.5 is good. but straight away i can tell your loosing time from your suspension. There's more time that can be gained.

  • completely agree - there's more time to be gained in more power, better tyres, and better brakes also but the idea was to test the car completely stock standard mechanically.

  • ur words fits the description of a spirit r driver . cheerz again mate

  • The RX7s are so light and nimble too as you can see it made a lot of ground on the infield section, the very high powered MRT STI was fast on the straights and on exit of corners with AWD but that was it. Thats why i love WP, gives "underpowered" but better handling cars a chance against high powered, poorer handling or heavier machines.

  • Love the RX7s and WP. 1min10 is "not bad", with just an Apexi tune and proper rubber. Stock suspension? Driving was also clean, and noticed using a lot of 3rd gear in 2nd gear corners. They are rather tall-geared arn't they? Must have got a pretty good tune to make some torque down low.. these engines have such great potential.

  • thanks for the comments mate - yes stock suspension and brakes also. Yes in my old Australian series 6 RX7, 3rd gear was quicker through the fish hook which is why I started the day doing that in this new car. But found the gearing worked much more in favour of 2nd in this car so was using 2nd there by the end of day and setting quicker laps.

  • actually forgot to mention - torque is pretty average in these cars (compared to say the Porsche's I've driven) but the RX7s are very poised on corner entry and exit so allows you to carry more speed more comfortably through the corners.

  • or does it mean the porsche driver is just shit? and you got skills

  • haha very possible. but i think it shows a stock RX7 is still pretty competitive against pretty much any porsche (other than the GT2's and GT3's)
