If I were the head of the mall, or had anything to do with this event, though... "The Gonk" would have been playing, at some point. It's the official zombie theme song... I think.
“I don't think they look any different from how normal Americans look,” says Yolanda. “If anything they look actually quite normal.”
“Like young people dressed as zombies but with arthritic conditions,” says Damon, “and eventually they will become old-age pensioners--fantastic zombies.”
“Are you saying that the dead old are already dead?” asks Yolanda.
“Of course the old are already dead but then the old would probably say that the young haven't yet lived.”
The zombies are lined up behind the police tape by the organisers of the walk, and then it begins.
“They are acting very well pretending to be dead, there is something really quite liberating about watching everyone behave in the same ways. I guess all is fair and square if everyone is dead. They all have the same opportunities and equal rights. It's as if that isn't really one leader but yet they all go forward together as one. They all share a collective vision,” says Rochelle.
“I didn't realise could be such a unifying experience... well I guess it always has been, I mean people like to gather at funerals," Yolanda reflects.
"Serious question: 1 T-800 vs 1 billion zombies?" asks Gareth.
I went there in 1993 for the 25th Anniversary of Night Of The Living Dead..the Monroeville Radisson hotel was right across from The Mall.
I met the surviving cast members of NOTLD, and a few people from the remake, including the guy who played the "Mr. MacGruder" zombie and the woman who played the zombie holding the doll.
Tom Savini, Adam West, and a huge guest list rounded out the festivities. A lot of fun..
I don't know about how to set up your own, but the original zombie shamble is taking place at Monroeville mall this Oct. 11 from 2 - 6. Food donations (for food bank) requested. Zombie ball afterwards at Houlihans.
In Pittsburg: City of steel and bridges -technology and robots, the zombie fest lurched, legions living un-dead shuffling towards a new world record zombie walk in Monroeville Mall - the dawn of the dead. Thousands performed as if on sedatives and the popular neuron-intoxicant alcohol, caked faces white makeup smeared fake blood across clothes, comfortably numb hands raised swaying horror rock, a carnival of contrived retards. Rochelle from above: "America dream: history dead, visual living."
The original Night Of The Living Dead, 1968, was finally put into color in 2004, during the filming of the remake of Dawn Of The Dead. You may find the color version here on YouTube :P
This is really awesome... the fact that the mall's management would commemorate the past in such a manner is not something you see too much these days.
The guy at the end is the great Joe Pilato, he played a cop at the docks in Dawn, a minor role that's a bit bigger in the extended cut.
But what he's most famous for is of course playing the sometimes cruel but very rational over the top obnoxious jerk Captain Rhodes in Day of the Dead, he had some of the best lines ever! They are so funny & bad ass at the same time, he had the most awesome death too but a stinky one.
Nice to see he lost weight, on the DVD interviews for Dawn & Day he was fat.
I think the funniest thing a person could do is take their friend (who is Absolutely afraid of zombies) to this. You should tell them its a fun road trip and of course don't tell them that this is going on. Then, once you get in there and they see all of those "zombies", it's going to be funny as hell to see them freak the fu*k out! XD
Truly amazing.. beeing from Norway and going to Pittsburgh only to see Romero´s house and some of the locations you could say my friends "the Walthers" are true Zombies.
looked a little like that face expression the dude at 4:11 did was because he was thinking "...wtf am i doing here?" great stuff tho. i love all zombie movies/games. frank west rules!
i miss living in the pitt area. used to live in delmont now i am surrounded by brain dead zombies every day(shitty redskins fans) original dawn of the dead > than the remake trash
um i know youve had this up for about a year now but for it to be 29 years the movie had to of come out in 1978 (which it did) not 1968 that would make it 39 years just thought you should know :)
I actually work in on the second floor of Monroeville mall in Rue 21. The zombies were a sight to behold. Hopefully I work on the day that they do it this year. And FYI: the escalators are usually broken anyway, but you could still slide down them if you wanted.
Thats gotta be one of the most famous malls in the world now, if not the most famous. I'd love to visit the place and slide down those famous escalators lol.
That was awesome! I wish I could've been there. Dawn of the Dead is my favorite movie of all time. Next time I'm in Connecticut, I'm definitely making a stop at that mall.
that isnt conneticut its pensylvania pittsburg. i should know because i lived there and our mall was monroeville mall i went there like every weekend and around halloween for some reason they kept making tributes to the film....
Its worth the drive!.. I'm in the akron-canton area and have been there a couple times. There is a store now dedicated to zombie's.. has some props and reinactment displays from the dawn film.. is working on a zombie shooting gallery and has tons of other stuff... I guess they are starting to offer guided tours of the mall, showing all the favorite spots from the film, like the elevator in penny's..
few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand
