REDS should've been Best Picture that year. It's ridiculous that "Slumdog Millionaire" will be remembered as "Best Picture" but REDS won't. The only reason the Academy didn't pick REDS as Best Picture was that they were afraid of Reagan and the right-wing goons who had taken over in Washington. MILK was last year's Best Picture, but some trendy assholes at the Academy cabbaged onto the Bollywood thing.
sadly you missed the point of the oscars dear sir... maybe you should revive the win by Chariots and just like the economic impossiblity of socialism you will see Reds is a great film but not to everyones tastes...
Warren Beatty:Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign : Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Im-man´u-el, God with us (Isaiah 7:14 Your Bible) And she shall bring forth a son, and you shalt call his name JESUS (Saviour): for he shall save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:21) For to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:10,11) Believe in Jesus Christ and be saved you (Acts 16:31)
I found Reds to be boring. Big Warren Beatty fan but this movie didn't do it for me. I felt like I should have gotten an award (reward) for getting all the way through.
@dormanbenton Warren Beatty produced Reds. The video mentioned that he received the nominations for Best Picture, Director and Actor - but he was also nominated was screenwriter (original screenplay). It were deserved nominations and even more deserved award as Best Director. It's an interesting story. But the problem was: Warren told the story really longer than the necessary.
I walked 65 blocks in a blizzard in Lincoln, Nebraska to see this movie. It was worth it. Ten years later, I moved to St. Petersburg Russia and lived there for a year (1997). I even taught English in Smolny, the actual spot where the Bolsheviks planned the Russian Revolution. Even in Russia, I felt that Beatty's Russia was true.
If I was nominated for Best Director,Producer,Writer, and Lead actor in one year! I would be alittle full of myself too. Plus, he did it twice. Won the thalberg award, a few golden globes, dga and wga awards. The guy is a legend!
i said that his comments made him seem up himself - i really enjoy beatty's films, especially reds. I just thought that pre-emptimg something like the Oscars Best Picture with his confidence was a touch arrogant. He is gifted though, no doubt.
He is not full of himself, he is one of the most gifted actors/directors ever! and if you look back at oscar history you will see that almost every movie that has won for best director and won for best picture, They pretty much go hand in hand...
This is an amazing film and I truly apperciate what it has opened me up to. Everyone now a days is so one track minded, it really doesn't hurt to see something in a different light, does it?
So true. Americans were turned off by it because the main character had a) communist sympathies and b) went to Russia to cover the Revolution. The movie was made to inform people of an important era of American history and show the social injustices that still exist today. The fear of communism is so great people fail to see how its principles could help US become a better nation.
People whorship captailism, never thinking that like communism it has lead to the downfall of many countries. Captalism as a system doesn't work. If it did, we wouldn't need Obama or Clinton to run for president in order to give people decent health care. If captialism worked, Enron would not have been run into the ground because of greed. In Germany, Nokia may face a fine for closing a factory in Germany and reopening in Romania--to save money despite earning over $3B! At least the EC is awake!
FOR WHATS ITS WORTH JIM AND WARREN ARE LIKE TWINS

@h9socialist Actually, Reagan personally invited Beatty for a private screening of Reds at the White House.

Reds should have won! The only thing people remember about Chariots of Fire is its theme song. Reds is even better when you watch it today.

@Tigerlily21 Why would a pro-Communist movie released during the Reagan years ever win Best Picture?

as good as the film is, warren seems more than a little up himself - 'if I win best director, then of course I'll win the best picture' what!?

He's right that he's prone to boring people, and this film is boring. Heaven's Gate is better.
I read that he calls people and begins talking before saying hello or introducing himself. That's creepy, you wouldn't find me doing that.

reds was an awesome film, a forgotten masterpiece
qwerty4197 4 years ago 6
It was not forgotten. It was put away on the dusty shelves of "not suited for broad audience" by the bourgeoisie.
