I was at this gig - 30 years on, it still shines out in my memory. I miss the Lizzy, and even though when we get together to roll back the years - without Phil it's a bit of a Chinese meal, like it don't fill you up - know what I mean?
Still makes me sad that Phil left this earth so soon, too soon. They never quite broke America, Lizzy, but they influenced *alot* of bands. If Phil hadn't been so unhealthy, there's no doubt Lizzy would've broken the US in a big way. It wasn't to be.
@grgoldner "No one"--fuck off. As a kid I never knew Phil or Thin Lizzy wasn't big in the US, as 93 KDKB out of Phoenix played the tunes regularly along with other big artists. I only learned of the shameful lack of commercial appreciation much later. I never saw evidence of it in the record shops growing up in Flagstaff.
Renegade is not their best album but Thin Lizzy are one of few bands that I can without a doubt say that there is not a bad album in their entire discography.
Renegade must be one of the most underrated rock albums ever. How could you argue with absolutely brilliant tracks like "Renegade", "No One Told Him", It's Getting Dangerous" etc. and the beautiful poetry they contain. Phil really sang his ass off on that album, and his whole heart out too, for that matter. Long live the memory of Philip Lynott.
@gramhound86 because there is too much filler on it, to be taken seriously...even though there are those excellent tracks that you mentioned. i would also give a shout to Hollywood (down on your luck), Angel of Death, and The Pressure Will Blow, as being good tracks on the Renegade album...but stuff like Leave This Town and Fats are just crap, while Mexican Blood is awful...still, that's only my opinion
How do you get this concert? I've never seen it on dvd. Although I'm not a fan of the Snowy White (god he's dull here) or John Sykes era I think the songs from this gig actually sound quite good. And Phil seems in fine form - but it's quite scary to think how much he must have gone down hill after this gig because in 83 he looked terrible and overweight.
some of my favorite stuff from them is when Lynott was physically losing it. His voice got better the puffier and sicker he got. I'm not trying to glamourize his self destruction, but Lizzy's 80's era must not be under estimated. Chinatown, Renegade, and Thunder in Lightning are 3 of their best albums.
