You obviously don't know me. I learned a lot from Bill. I respect him as a musician and teacher. I have earned Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Music and am more than qualified to have an intelligent opinion on this topic. I am 60 years old and work as a professional pianist. I have been studying piano more than 50 years and was the piano player for the Army Band of New York stationed at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, NY. You are far less qualified to make an intelligent comment.

Gotta respect Bill Dobbins ;) Anyone (composers, first and foremost) who've had a look at "A Linear Approach" by Bill? That book had a significance for my education which can barely be spoken, I'm ever so greatful to him for writing it.

I remember Herbie Nicols. He was one of the subjects in Leroy Jones Book about 4 lives in jazz music. Alec Wilder was a subject of discussion on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz Radio Show on NPR. Nice ballad and well played here. I have never heard Bill Dobbins play although I know he writes good books on how to play jazz piano. His good academic job keeps him isolated from the harsh reality of trying to make a living playing jazz.

Despite your pretenses at being a knowledgeable musician, your ignorance is explicit in your thinly veiled attack on Bill. While he is indeed a pianist, he is foremost a composer and arranger. Perhaps you might have played one of his hundreds of charts for big band, or for any other ensemble, or read his pedagogical texts on arranging/theory/et al, from which he made his living, along with directing the famed WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany, from 1994-2002; although, perhaps you haven't.
