I had the pleasure of attending this performance, one of the most remarkable evenings of my life. I remember that many hoops had to be jumped through to obtain the tickets... I first had to present myself at a ticket office one evening at 10:00 or so to have my name put on a list. I then had to reappear at both 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM daily for two or three days to have my name checked off. Anyone who failed to appear each time had his/her name removed. What a wonderful memory, though!

The conducting is superb, and the singing good. Zeffirelli's meaningless kitsch does not add favourably.

A pleasure to the eye and ear. Most entertaining (and most played) of operas. Probably because there are so many recognizable arias. Wonderful singing, acting and set design.

The best music in the whole opera is for me the scene of the cards (1:42)
Ultimately I don't know if Carmen really deserves its enormous popularity but I guess it does have mass appeal and the last act can be wonderful in a great performance.
