Akira Toryiama put all of his time into his manga and anime when he wasn't with his family.

And if DBZ wasn't good, blame the dubbing company, not Akira, ebcause dubbign companies can really mess up an anime--like 4kids messed up Sonic X and, arguably, made Yugioh less decent than the Japanese original.

Akira Toriyama was making this stuff up as he goes on and here we have this well developed villain with this well developed plot on how he's related to the main character in some ways.
