Well, that knowledge of the Middle Ages comes partly by my art history study and partly from my educational living history performances, in which I demonstrate leather crafting for children and other interested history people.
When we made this costume for the choir we debated that the cistercial clothing would be the most appropriate. The dress the choir have is the actual dress that all the cistercial monks had that were also priests. This is also a decision we made as it was mostly these monks that sang in the cloisters and churches of the cistecian order.
@DarkwingsWoW A good decision. Like I stated before: your performance sets an example for more authenticity in ancient music renderings. Until now, I watched the (also praiseworty) recurring of using authentic musical instruments at various ancient music festivals, but this effort to also give extra attention to costume is the finishing touch!
Aha, I see.......that may be due to the colder climat there. Please, I hope I did not offend you and the choir, I do living history of the Middle ages, it is the first time that I see a complete group in authentic religious costume...I hope your choir will set an example for historical music performances, it gives just that extra touch...keep on the good work and maybe I hope to see you one day in the Netherlands! Do you also perform outside Sweden?
For instance, the oldest, the Benedictines, wore an all-over black habit.
The reforming contemplative orders from the late 11 century onwards, like Cistercians, Norbertines and Carthusians wore an all-over white habit. They wore this also when performing mass.
Please, don't get me wrong....I am only commenting on the exact colours, the pattern of the costume is completely authentic. It struck me very much, in a positive way, that your choir did such an excellent job in getting the authentic look.
But it is a fact that most monastic orders can be dinstinguished by rigid colour patterns.

Oopssss...I owe you an apology...I have just read literature that the cistercian scapular (mantle) was black when worn for manual labour.

Hmmmm...I thought the Cistercian costume was all white (robe and mantle) whereas the Dominicans had black mantles and white robes?
sendanor 2 years ago
Great! Are all members dominicans or is the monk-like costume done to render an epoch feeling to the performance?

Nice!! This really is good stuff. Are you in the choir? it has a nice sound to it.
