I once lived in a country where the media was owned by the government. Although there have been some changes, people there still don't really understand the essence of free speech and how important it is to the very fabric of true democracy. Democracy is cacophonic and it's a mess, but from that mess a certain form of order springs.

The United States government controls the media too. Time to wake up, there IS no free speech in the US anymore. Did you witness the G20 in Pittsburgh possibly where they arrested innocent journalist for nothing and detained others? Free speech is still very much alive here, I'm not too worried about it yet. There's plenty of nonsense flying from the press, but it's more related to boosting their ratings than the government. The only time I raised an eyebrow was when I heard Bush say "if you are not with us, you are against us". It was addressed as much to fellow Americans who didn't share his ideology and policies, as actual enemies of America who dream of our demise.
