Since the post is so old I won't bother the original poster (above) with a response, but IMHO, as somebody who's played Irish music for quite awhile (various sessions, two different bands, etc.), Flook and Lunasa really aren't much like each other at all. Flook, to my ear, does stuff that is much more intricate and has Balkan and other influences. That's just one of the differences. They're "alike" mostly in that they're both Irish-based but not strictly trad.

That's not a slam on either, by the way, but I tend to like Flook better because I don't think they lean as heavily on electricity and heavy bass lines.

I am not agree with you karbby: they are not aout of rhythm at all; they are playing in odd meter or with displaced accents.It seems like being out of pulse, but the´re not! They are great because of that!

I love Flook, but this video doesn't seem to be live or at least not completely - when they get fast I can hear bass and a synth sound - not to mention bongos ... it does sound rather perfect to be live too - no audience noise.

It was announced on their web page and myspace page. They basically said after 13 years it was time to do other things. Remember Sarah recently had a baby, and many of the players (John Joe and Ed) play with a lot of other ensembles, especially with Mike McGoldrick. They did say that all remained friends, and held out the possibility for getting together in the future.

Saw the band in Whitehaven a month or so back, had been trying to get to see them for some time. Verdict? Astonishing.

Damien o'Kane was with them and he was just sensational. This is a great video but doesn't do the live act justice (besides, the audio here sounds like it's taken from the CD - Brian ad-libs a lot when he's playing normally, yet this video's sound track is virtually identical to the studio version). Still, a great listen.
