Since the post is so old I won't bother the original poster (above) with a response, but IMHO, as somebody who's played Irish music for quite awhile (various sessions, two different bands, etc.), Flook and Lunasa really aren't much like each other at all. Flook, to my ear, does stuff that is much more intricate and has Balkan and other influences. That's just one of the differences. They're "alike" mostly in that they're both Irish-based but not strictly trad.
That's not a slam on either, by the way, but I tend to like Flook better because I don't think they lean as heavily on electricity and heavy bass lines.
I am not agree with you karbby: they are not aout of rhythm at all; they are playing in odd meter or with displaced accents. It seems like being out of pulse, but the´re not! They are great because of that!
I can't understand how the people in the audience can sit so still while listening to this amazing music. Damn, I can barely keep sitting on my computer chair!
Does he change the whistle in the middle of the song (when the Song goes faster)? I know the faster second part is with a d-high whistle, but the first part I want to no... can anybody help? thanks
I love Flook, but this video doesn't seem to be live or at least not completely - when they get fast I can hear bass and a synth sound - not to mention bongos ... it does sound rather perfect to be live too - no audience noise.
It was announced on their web page and myspace page. They basically said after 13 years it was time to do other things. Remember Sarah recently had a baby, and many of the players (John Joe and Ed) play with a lot of other ensembles, especially with Mike McGoldrick. They did say that all remained friends, and held out the possibility for getting together in the future.
Well that's the first Irish 7/8 song I've heard. I play in an Irish folk music group but I'm just a beguinner at this type of music.. interessting indeed

They are obviously all great players around the board, but it would be cool if they played irish music. Brian Finnigan's whistle playing really irritates me. It sounds like a computer.
Saw the band in Whitehaven a month or so back, had been trying to get to see them for some time. Verdict? Astonishing.
Damien o'Kane was with them and he was just sensational. This is a great video but doesn't do the live act justice (besides, the audio here sounds like it's taken from the CD - Brian ad-libs a lot when he's playing normally, yet this video's sound track is virtually identical to the studio version). Still, a great listen.
I might just follow the trend and say it, I'm a young musician too! A bodhran player of sorts to be exact, a bodhran player as it happens who is utterlyawe struck by John Joe's playing. It's incredible, and he's fast becoming an idol of mine!
I love flook. As a young musician and a lover of folk music i think there amazing. Makes me want to take out my whistles and floot and jam every time they play. Saw them in aberdeen and they were amazing
As a guitarist (and an Irish American), I have always appreciatedFlook. Saw them in Cincinatti, OH, USA in March of '07 I believe. Great show. They bring the music to a new level, aye?
I saw them this past fall when Mike McGoldrick was subbing for Sarah, and they played some new material, which Brian did say was for the next album, though he didn't say when it was coming.
Yeah, Michael was with them. Sarah had literally given birth a week or less before the show. I don't remember the new material, but I'll keep my eyes open.
worst audience in the world. Not one head nodding to the beat. How people can see these guys and not go nuts for it weird. Seen them a few times on the right side of the pond. Absolutely phenomenal.
What kind of comment is that? She is a talented musician and composer! When you play in a band like Flook -then you can air you ass brained opinions! Relax and enjoy the music!
I love this band, especially watching them live. I saw them once and realised one little thing - anyone ever watched Pinky and the Brain? Brian looks just like the Brain!
They are playing Wales in a few months, check their facebook. Also, this song is amazing...
