@jazznerd4 The pickups obviously are important, look in my "favorites" on my YouTube channel, there's another video of the Pigs there through a 40's Epiphone Elektar amp and a Gibson 335 with Pigs installed. Its near the bottom of the first page of the favorites list. The Pigs are way way different than any other look alike product out there, no one makes anything remotely like these.....
i love the sound of the pig but i like the look of gibson's p94 (black cover with chrome around it) is that something you can do?? or do i have to get it with the metal cover??
Yes it must be in a metal cover, it must be tightly held together and you can't do that with plastic covers. Look in my "favorites" videos and some customers from Netherlands did a demo of them in a Gibson 335, you can see the plain nickel silver covers there.
I don't use the black matte plastic covers anymore, they are real thin and flimsy and have to be glued on, its just a bad idea to use them, makes a very weak construction. If you can find undrilled black nickel silver covers I could use those, but I know of no source for those.
@SDPickups that's too bad, but hey, quality before looks, right!? well , my good man, you'll probably be hearing from me soon...your pigs sound hotter than p94s.
Actually, I just looked at the P94, its not what I thought it was. Yes I can get those kind of covers, and hopefully find some black plastic for the top part. These frame covers just became available to me, so yes I can do that look.....
It would be nice to hear the pickups without the distortion. I have a '53 Les Paul and comparing them with other pickups, the sound, undistorted gives the greatest indication of the character of the pickup.
Search YouTube for "The Insomniacs." You will see that same guitar played at lower distortion levels, there are several videos, tried to put a link here but it didn't work....
That said it would be nice hearing more chord/non blues style played on theme like Rolling Stones/White Stripes type stuff...perhaps with an AC30 pushed or 5E3?
Can't cover ALL bases. You can see more of the pickups in a live situation, same player, search "The Insomniacs" on YouTube and you will see the guitar in a live gig situation, look for that guitar. Always looking for customer sound clips and videos, if you buy a set YOU can do the White Stripes with other amps etc. We can only do so much here :-) thanks....
There is no pickup that was ever made or is made currently like this pickup, it is unique in the world. This is why it doesn't sound like similar looking single-coil-in-a-bucker-cover pickups made by Gibson and others. All the others are very shrill and useless, the Pig has single coil tones but is much fatter tone than anything else that looks similar. Search "The Insomniacs" here on YouTube and you will see this guitar being played live.
You see, I am looking for P-90's (one dogear and one non-dogear) and since these are modeled after P-90 I had thought I could find some P-90's that sounded that good.
I get alot of requests for that "hideous" pickup, this is an art deco design like you would find on a National or Supro style guitar, I also do these in plain and matte finishes, its your choice of what they look like. The tone is unique to this pickup, there is no other pickup on planet Earth made anything like these are.....
He likes to use 11 gauge strings buts it NOT the strings that is giving if the thick tone, its the construciton inside the pickup, this pickup in no way resembles any other similar single coil in a humbucker cover, most of those are tinny and shrill, and obviously the Pig isn't :-) Buy one and find out, they are guaranteed you'll like them. You can see more of this guitar on YouTube, just search The Insomniacs, V. is a great player with a killer band...
Thats not me, thats Vyasa Dodsun of the Insomniacs, he studied Suburban Slim, Charley Baty, Junior Watson, Rick Holmstrom etc. You can contact him through the Insomniacs on MySpace...
Yeah, P90s are great pickups. A very cool tone to get in the middle switch position is an out of phase tone thats like TBone Walker tone, you need a push pull pot to do that. The PIgs do that too, if you have a humbucker guitar and don't want to cut it up for P90s, the Pigs are a great solution.
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to look for that info!
I have a 260, but I can't get it to sound like that...He's a great guitarist.
He could probably play a terd & make it sound good.
Maybe I need to get a couple of those pickups...
Anyways thanks again & keep up the cool videos.
Sincerely, Jeff B

@jazznerd4 I dug through emails, its a 260 or 260A Magnatone. Vyasa is always on tour and haven't talked to him a couple years...

OK,I love the sound....Which model of Magnatone are you using?(260,280)?
Thanks , It's a joy listening to you.

@jazznerd4 I'm not sure of the model number, it has 2x12" speakers in it is all I know for sure. He owns two of them at this point, great amps.

@SDPickups but on your website it says about pig 90 ... "I have matte raw nickel silver, gold, black plastic or the retro video version" ...??

I can fit these into soap bar covers as well but they are intended for bucker guitars. Watch my P90 video here on YouTube. I'll send you a link....

Excellent playing! Great tones!
What guitar is that? I can't quite understand what he's saying. It looks quite interesting.
Bluefinger 3 years ago
It's an Italia. Cool guitar but very cheaply made and doesn't stand up to touring without alot of parts changes....
SDPickups 3 years ago
What gauge of strings was he using on the Italia in this video? It sure sounds thick and gnarly.

I have a strat copy, and it has Gibson style P90 pickups in it, and the middle switch with both pickups on has a very unique and sweet tone.
