  • I don't understand why people say you can't like the good old stuff and new music. I love old music SOOOOO much better than what is coming out nowadays, but I don't understand why you can't like two different kinds of music.

  • This is so many types of awesome. An amazing band covering another amazing amazing with an amazing singer. Sweetness!

  • While I think it's cool to cover this song, & they did a good job....it wasn't great simply because they didn't rock it.....while admittedly a bigger DK's fan then Nirvana or The Foo Fighters, I like that he gives a heads up to music & bands he likes or was influenced by....

  • hell yeah fresh fruit for rotting vegetables

  • Aside from Mastodon, all of the other bands that performed are just mediocre. I don't care who Mastodon plays for because they're so aggressive & heavy that they will ween off all the posers. It's a marvel just seeing them perform because of the technical musicianship.

  • Stop crying, kanker flikkers

  • Foo Fighters are shite! Absolute rubbish.

  • wank

  • Serj does a really good job singing this song, but it really sucks that they covered this song at the MTV VMAs of all places...

  • yeh think of the irony right

  • This is so weird...so used to hearing the Dead Kennedys playing this...

  • Dave Grohl is a great drummer and guitarist but he's a fuckin' tool. What was the point of them even covering this song?

  • Hey you cant talk about god like that!

  • WTF are you talkin about?

  • What is your point? You're an idiot.

    He's not a tool.

  • First of all, I completely forgot that I even made this comment.

Second, Dave Grohl loves to introduce the classic hardcore punk music to a generation that doesn't care. WTF? MTV doesn't care about 80's punk rock. The Dead Kennedys made a song called "MTV GET OFF THE AIR." Now what does that tell you.

Although, I'm sure you know nothing of that song because you're a fuckin' baby. You're only sixteen! Go get your diaper changed.

  • Actually, I'm 14 and I'm a huge fan of System, Dead Kennedys and the Foo Fighters.

    Asshole, don't presume things.

Who gives a shit if the Kennedys had a song with that name? How does that support your arguement that David Grohl is a "fucking tool".

  • Seligsuper,

He's a tool for MTV you FUCK! You're not a fan of the Dead Kennedys because you would be agreeing with me instead of arguing.

What Dave Grohl is doing is hypocrisy. It's a juxtapose. Why would you cover a band that wrote a song called,"MTV GET OFF THE AIR?" WHY I ASK?

Also, kid, you're 14. I'm 26. How the fuck are you gonna know shit about the Dead Kennedys when you were semen in your dad's nutsack when they were around. I

  • I only know of the Dead Kennedys through re-issued compilations. I couldn't attend any of the shows because I was in diapers when they were around. Trust me, I know more about them than you do. And don't try to write some spill about how they still tour & that the Dead Kennedys are still awesome because that's a load of crap. Dead Kennedys' died when they kicked out Jello.

  • That is true that Dead Kennedy's died when Jello left. But Jesus Christ, calm down!

They covered the song because it's a good song, nothing more, just because you're all butthurt because they covered this song doesn't mean that Dave Grohl is a tool in any way.

  • But you're still not answering my question? Why on MTV???? MTV doesn't even play videos anymore!? WTF? And Dave Grohl still shows his shit-eating grins on their network. Listen to what I'm saying, m'okay. He's playing Holiday in Cambodia to a bunch of preppy jocks. This song had a great message behind it. The lyrics were themed around Polpot & the Vietnam War. The kids in the crowd probably don't even know(& probably don't care to know) who the Dead Kennedys' are. Trust me on this.

  • Dave Grohl is a great musician & funny guy but between the Probot album & this, I kinda lose respect for him a little bit. With Probot, it's like Dave Grohl is saying, "ok, I might have made a shit load of pop albums with Foo Fighters but here I am again ready to metal out." Cmon man, if you were truly a metal fan, you would have done that after Nirvana. It's like now he wants this generation to appreciate something they could care nothing about.

Overall, Foo Fighters are still good though.

  • Look at the group of people at the show and watch other videos from the same awards.

Do you seriously think that a bunch of Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Lady Gaga fans came to this?

Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal and Foo Fighters? The crowd seems to be enjoying it. So, how is he a tool for bringing up a song that "no one cares about"?

  • Before I answer that, just ask yourself "what Jello Biafra would think?" He would piss on old Dave for exploiting his music. Yeah the crowd may have enjoyed it because they're at the MTV Movie Awards. After that, I'm pretty sure they didn't care who wrote the song or why.

I can guarantee this statement. The only reason the crowd came was to see the Foo Fighters & Serj Tankian not knowing what to expect. They came to see some good ole' MTV friendly hard rock like the bands you mentioned.

  • your right hes a damn fool i think their performance sucked s. o. t. down. suck and dave is a piece of shit for even being on m t v why would anybody who loves music real music( not hip hop sucking on a pork chop that aint music ) even watch m t v its stale

  • Thanks man. At least someone here has some sense.

  • Jello Biafra I'm sure hated this and Dirk Dirsken is rolling in his grave.

  • By this event happening, true music died a little.

  • I think Serj did a fucking good job here !!

  • its system of a down idiot! And hes really good. Im not a big fan of soad but watch there song byob listen to the vocals

  • lol, u idiot. dave grohl and chris shiflett are playing guitar, and taylor hawkins on drums. FOO FIGHTERS + SERJ. not system

  • wow jello must have been pissed

  • the song is a classic, but this syndrom of a down singer really SUCKS

  • the crowd was full of F****** h8rs

  • I wonder if Serj and Dave were sticking it to MTV by playing a Dead Kennedys track on their channel? ...I hope so. crowd was total crap but what do you expected from MTV?

There is nothing wrong with any word in and of itself it's the context they're used in and the racist assholes using them to be hateful....George Carlin taught me everything I know.

MTV GET OFF THE AIR - NOW!

  • He would think they killed the song and the fans WTF.

  • I wonder what Jello Biafra thinks of this?

  • Probably hated it, knowing him.

  • Punk is alive and well! I'm surprised that the crowd didn't tear up and destroy everything in the room - that kicked arse!

  • Wow look at those fucking kids raising their index finger and wiggling it up and down. do that at a real punk show and you will get hurt. i really like the shot were the camera points to a set of hollister hippies that look confused as fuck.

  • lol, weird to hear a DK's cover of Holiday in Cambodia on MTV, i'm actually surprised.

kick ass video and music! DK forever, jello biafra is the best.

  • yeah good cover, but the beat it not as effective, but none the less its a nice approach

  • u suck dead kenedys are beter than u

  • w/o serj, it would've been unbearable. it would've been acceptable if he didnt change "niggers" to "brothers" what a cop out. If you're going to cover a provocative song, dont sugar coat it for gods sake.

  • The DK did it as well you know...

Although it does suck when they do shit like that :(

  • Its bad, not awful unless you look at it in context which you should. It is way worse than the original version (hard to compete w/it of course) Also, THE FOO FIGHTERS, come on they totally don't deserve to cover this, the dead Dead Kennedys are spinning in their grave that its these schmucks doing it, these are the guys the song makes fun of.

  • Dead Kennedys aren't dead

  • lol despite the name they are not in fact dead.

  • i totally agreewith this guywhen i finished reading ur post i started clapping and cheering

  • Wow. I can't believe they destroyed that song. I like Serj and everything but jeez. And MTV had to change the lyrics a little. And like someone else said, the word "nigger" in the orginal song isn't about the band's racism. (someone posted that) It's about kids who have entitlement issues and the ignorant culture around them.

I didn't even know MTV was about music anymore. Last time I checked it was all about reality shows.

  • It's not a bad cover. Lacks a bit of the intensity of the original. And yea they changed a word or two, but you're allowed to do that in a cover.

  • i dont get y a band would take such a great song & ruin it like this...his voice is annoying too, btw, especialy wen he kills the "pol pot" part

  • great version except that you can´t dance dead kenedys, or at least you shouldn´t

  • it so gd i got it on vinyl amazing

  • I saw them play this at the O2

  • and if he aint gonna say it I will...'braggin that you know how the NIGGERS feel cold and the slums got so much soul'

  • Dde you'd better rethink words cuz this was posted.......RACIST

  • exactly what I'm on about,,,,people who havent got a clue what the original lyrics are about. the word nigger is in the original lyrics and the song is about ignorance and....youve just shown that!

  • ..the original track with the word nigger in it that the Foos havent got the balls to say is the complete opposite of racism its about spoilt ignorant rich kids and cultural ignorance

  • I'm pretty sure you can't say "nigger" on cable television.

  • an awesome, sinister track.... covered in an amature way and played to a bunch of idiots who havent got a clue what the fuck they're listening to.

  • ur right !

Although I like the rock of ff I was expecting something better !

    Its DK ffs

  • what an annoying version...........

  • this is off of the long road to ruin 7" it's such a shame that itunes didnt put this up for sale!

  • Great cover. Get serj to tour with the dead kennedys. If they can't get jello, he's the next best.

As far as the MTV vs Punk argument, while I agree that MTV is mostly shit, I think more punk bands should play it. Why? Think about this. Who needs to hear the message of this song more, the hardcore punk kids or the MTV demographic?

  • Everything is so clean : people and music. Where are you Jello Biafra ?

  • He is like 49, hes too old to have huge tours and stuff.

i thought it was funny when Arnie became Mayor of CA and Jello said in a interview "California Uber Alles, Indeed"

hes fantasitcally witty, satirical and sarcastic

  • Thats a fucking disgrace

  • i thought this was foo fighters, looks like david grohl and taylor on drums

  • so what about the lyrics being changed for MTV, just to hear a cover of a classic DK number, about time, MTV may be commercial but at least we get to see and hear this. nice one Serj and band whoever you was.

  • tese are not foo fighters but system of a down

  • no its foo fighters with Serj (from soad) singing

  • i gave it a second look and you are right!thanx for the info...

  • yerr n/p lol

its a fucking phitt song x

  • maybe if you guys stopped jerkin off about your music tastes we could get something done

  • Is this or is this not a music video?

Activism is great but note the first syllable. What/who did Dead Kennedys actually overthrow/convince/impeach?

And what do you mean do something?

  • Music made the Dead Kennedys, man. Not the other way around.

  • Kind of funny that this entire song is downright insulting the Mtv demographic.

    Or is that to obvious?

    Fantastic.

  • Beautiful irony. And all the drunk bimbos in the front row are squealing for the band to have their babies...

  • OMG!!!! DAVE GROHL!!! OMG!!!!

  • Such an unworthy crowd...

  • yup.

  • Cool version. On MTV?! Yes, blasphemy. But I think we've got to take the crumbs where they lay these days.

  • This should have never been allowed. It saddens me that the Dead Kennedys have moved away from their non-conformist roots, to allowing one of their classic songs to be EDITED and preformed on MTV....

    MTV GET OFF THE AIR!

  • A good cover of the original by the Dead Kennedys. My only complaint is that its on MTV, The Dead Kennedys deserve better than that.

  • if it wasnt for mtv people wouldnt gt to see music its allowing things to reach a wider audience and if u say that selling out then thats bullshit

  • I have no idea what you just said.

  • alrity then! i need puntation! if it wasnt for MTV nobody would get to see such music or it wouldnt hit as big an audience. The dead kennedys may deserve better but at least theremusic can still be appricated in some way...if you wanna say that audiences are selling out then thats a big pile!! like the ting with greenday and american idoit- they need ta make money u would wanna to its not about the music....we all sadly no that!

  • Hmm. More than just a hint of Sex Pistols' Holidays In The Sun, with a bit of L7's Fast and Frightening (when they played it outside LA City Hall in was it 1990 they had Dave Grohl behind the kit). Still, I agree about the sanitised lyrics... :-(

  • dis was done in da 80's,punk at its best-get a life u pretend stars'n'stripe moterfuckers!from the brits

  • They should have done MTV get off the air. That would be a true 'fuck you' to MTV.

  • I love how there is only one person truly rocking out, like he actually knows what song is being performed.

Daren should have beat up some of the people in the audience and not the guy from Mastadon.

  • No thats right it should've been MTV get off the air

  • Oh the irony..... they should've done Terminal Preppie

  • I'd like to see them do 'Bleed for Me'.....and about a dozen other DK covers.

  • This is very interesting...Mtv you will pay

  • way to butcher a song

  • changed the lyrics! way to go for the MTV generation who can't take real punk rock. fuck this santitized sell out version. whoever says this is better than the original is fuckin dumb. green day might as well have covered this as it's about as offensive and threatening.

  • what ever happened to "MTV Get Off The Air"? something isn't right here.

  • Excellent. Dead Kennedy's on MTV. Rock raping cable. That's the way it should be.

  • All you Bitching asswipes Shut your mouths, you should be proud that someone so influential Like a Lead singer of SOAD , that brought back the ROck in mid 90's and now his bringing back Punk rock and your bitching.??? Yea i admit MTV is a Sell out trader pigs, but not SERJ TANKIAN! And he Does say every lyric as is, and the melody is so much better then original!

  • Actually, the lyric of the first line is "you know you've seen it all" and he sings "you think" but I know what you mean. MTV is sell out bullshit and at least they're trying a bit to acknowledge it. Maybe now kids will know a song from the band whose T-Shirt they're wearing.. that they paid 25 dollars for at the mall.

  • It's a pretty good cover and awesome to hear on MTV, although I don't care for the tounge trill. But "every lyric as is"? No sir. "Brother" replaces the word "Nigger". Yeah, it's MTV and you can't say that shit. But if a song can't be played as it was intended to be, maybe you shouldn't choose it.

  • he does not repeat every word he replaced the n word with brother system of down suck talentless fools

  • I love the way the lyrics to this song completely rip the shit out of rich yuppie kids, and then ya take a look at the freakin' crowd!

Bet mosta them vote Republican or something too (after all they are at the VMA's), which makes the boiling pot even sweeter.

  • the original is by the dead kennedys

  • Totally wasted on these mtvidiots.

  • They should've covered "Pull My Strings"

  • This was the highlight of the night, great cover...

    Serj makes a great jello

  • serj ur the best

  • Who are the Foo Fighters? Dead Kennedy's rule, Nazi Punks, Fuck Off!

To be fair they dont do a bad job, but yeah very strange that this was done at MTV awards.

  • Serj is God, i love him, nice cover with this cool band named Foo Fighters :)

  • A Dead Kennedys cover at the VMA's that was actually good?

    I'm in disbelief!

  • Nice.
