Sounds like some kind of birth/exorcism rite, but i hear it's actually a ritualistic chant sung during marriages. What I feel is a hushed reverence mixed with a grand, biblical fear at human manipulation of the humanity, visually embodied by the cyborg assembly. I'd like to see more movies set the tone with the opening like GITS does it, rather than spray credentials and play around with the logo.
I love the theme, it sounds like that Buddhist meditation music you can get, you know, kind of ancient, and rhythmic. The contrast of using it over all this futuristic scenery really works.
This is not "Reincarnation", it's called "Making of a Cyborg". "Reincarnation" is the theme that plays over the ending credits. It has the same chorus, but also has strings added and a vocal solo.
Actually we don't explicitly know who is being created there. That's an interesting question. Of course it's assumed that it is Motoko but there's no evidence. It's kind of a lot more interesting to not think of it as Motoko, and instead as simply one of many such shells. A lot more eerie and fitting..
this film has you craving for a new spiritual release from the machine world that is evolving around you, humans becoming less and less, dying out if you will, and instead more machine like, the human soul a myth in this new world? was it always a myth? is man to machine our destiny? this film brings out the philosopher in us all I think or for me atleast, the second film also thrives in the same dimension and agenda. I love it all. and the music was amazingly crafted for the film, beautiful.
When I listen to this music, I feel long history of evolving of human, at the same time, I felt message that a human should be remembered that an ancient.
i never seen this anime, but it seems great to watch. by the way if a cyborg is a shell with a "ghost", what we are? meat with a ghost inside or something?
@chelo88888 generally speaking that is the premise of the discussion. is there a "soul" can a cyborg have one. how much technology can you replace and still call yourself "human".. BTW .. it is totally AWESOME. a second one (unoffical prt 2) called "Innocence" was made about 10 yrs afterwards. meanwhile there is also a tv series and anime. Called G.I.T.S (ghost in the shell) S.T.O (stand alone complex) and S.S.S(solid state society). If you like any you should like all. check em out.
Why oh why did they see a need to redo this opening for 2.0? It's still perfect. I was in awe of it in '95 and it still blows my mind. I love the patience this opening expects from it's audience, and it spends it's meditative moments wisely.
The story of Ghost in the Shell revolves around the question of what makes us human. The first film's plot, what you are watching, is basically about a character, famously known as the major, questioning her own humanity. Yes, she was born just like the rest of us, but due to a childhood illness or accident has inhabited a cybernetic body since she was very young. What makes her still human? The few cells left in brain? Her memories? The title, ghost in the shell, is a good one.
@mouryufox91 I once saw an episode of Ripley's Believe It Or Not where the breasts of a bronze statue were blurred out. Not anything explicit, not anything vulgar, not even a REAL goddamn person, but a piece of art representing a woman which had to be censored.
It's not hard to understand why nudity is covered up, but I hope you understand how ridiculous it can be to become afraid of our own bodies, of ourselves. Again, this is a piece of artwork.
Had no idea they'd released a 2.0 version of this. I loved the typewriter effect, and it's a pity they took it out. Really hope it wasn't the OP for The Matrix that made them remove the green numerals. I mean, this is what inspired The Matrix, surely they weren't worried someone would accuse them of copying it...? :/
I'd pay serious money to see the original version, NOT the 2.0 version, in Blu-Ray. The original just looks so much better then 2.0 except in the case of the opening (although I miss the 'typewriter' SFX), in just about every way possible. Hey everybody! I just released my solo album "Mirror Image" that contains electronic upbeat and ambient songs heavily inspired by the music and storyline of the Ghost in the Shell series. If you're interested you can check out the songs on my youtube page, and links to my myspace page and places to download the full album are on my youtube channel as well :) .
@Kitsune913 I found the series to be surprisingly deep -- constantly asking the questions: Where does one's humanity lie in a world of interconnected technology? How can we draw a line in the sand when geopolitical, social and personal boundaries are increasingly just a matter of opinion? How far can we take our global obsession with staying 'in touch'? And how far should we? Is the truth buried amongst layers of lies or was the idea of Truth a lie all along?
Finally bought my own DVD copy a few days ago. Since my only previous experience was with the Stand-Alone Complex series, it was really interesting to compare. (Also, I wonder if Motoko's wake-up-hand-twitch in the first SAC opening was sort of a throwback reference to this 1995 film opening?)
Always loved the part when she put on her jacket. Such perfect animation and attentions to detail. I mean, the making of the cyborg part just blew me away yet a silhouette of Motoko putting on a jacket is just as pleasing to the eye. Greatest movie ever.
CGI has less character then hand-drawn animation because the artistic vision is drained by lifeless parameter panels, curve editors and shader programming.
also it is hard to make the stuff thats isn't really in 3D space.. stuff that 'flows', moves and has artistic dynamics (although it is getting better each year, thats moore's law for you)
Ghost in the Shell is an intelligent, creative and artistic masterpiece: it has vision, style, charm, identity and it makes you think.
Science Fiction movies from Hollywood have nothing to offer compared to this, even after all this time. There are some rare exceptions, but they mostly took their good stuff from this one.
And compare this to bulk generated flash like 'I Robot', 'Minority Report' or 'Screamers' and weep on their shallowness and abuse of the original books..
When I hear people say that anime is stupid, I always think "You obviously have never seen Ghost in the Shell". This movie is such a masterpiece. I hate it when people cast it in the same rank as whatever generic magical school-girl tentacle alien moe romance anime they get their opinions from.
Ghost in the Shell is still top-quality even by today's standards. There needs to be more animation and story-writing like this.
Ghost in the Shell is difficult to understand, though, which is another negative stereotype about anime "for grown-ups".
You have to admit, though, that your average anime series is not very good. In fact I'd say that manga are often better than their anime adaptations, with a few notable exceptions.
@sputnikpanicpuppet that Ghost in the Shell for some is difficult to understand may have something to do with that the makers had an original artistic vision and didn't use the hollywood cookie-cutter. some people cant handle that., they need everything explained and ready (also some might have limited brainspace and no frame of reference for deeper techno-human philosophy)
I am as anti-Hollywood as everyone else (for one because as an European I don't really care about what mainstream American movies are about) and I like Ghost in the Shell a lot, but I just think it isn't particularly accessible to someone who doesn't respect anime (yet). There are better choices, but as far as anime goes, I won't deny Ghost in the Shell is top tier.
gee.. i rember i was 16 and that movie was like a magic touch for my brain.. sth like Matrix bit later... and music is absolutelly great... bless the author of it!!
A masterpiece of animation, and music. The hand-drawn actually-skilled style needs to make a comeback, animation from the 80s and 90s is so much more incredible.
I'll say that, as an animator, cgi requires less. Moving a rigged 3d character in space with the added flexibility of moving a camera is an entirely different- and relatively forgiving- process, compared to illustrating each image frame by frame.
BUT! I'm not saying that cgi doesn't require talent, simply that no animation today- 2d or 3d- employs this level of talent.
i wouldn't go so far as to say that everything needs to be hand drawn, the vast majority of animation looks better now than it did back then, and look at byousoku 5CM o.0 ITS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! but i would like to see some more intelligent animation coming out of japan some time soon. there hasnt been much to match GITS since it came out.
@surruk true enuff. though they do have a few good things. not totally on par with GITS per se., but they do have some good stories. like Clannad or Arikawa under the bridge, admittedly those and a few others are more anime -sh like drawn. but the stories by CLAMP and like xxxholic / Tsubasa. and a few others are actually worth watching. if just for the story content.
@mrkrinkle699 I like Ninja Scroll too, though while awesome I find it doesn't really hold up after multiple viewings. Plenty of action, but not a very rich plot. Never heard of Sword and the Stranger, I'll have to check it out - thanks for the name drop. B)
@SilvrDragon52 Is there any kind of hand-drawn anime in our time? I mean one that is really produced with the hands and not altered by computer dudes?
What a brilliant intro. Such incredible animation. They don't make them like this anymore.

@snizshizzle I agree. For me, it starts when she gets out of the bed. For a moment, you forget that scene is animated because it looks so realistic.

Someone got this clip in HD?

@Naore12
Ghost in the Shell is difficult to understand, though, which is another negative stereotype about anime "for grown-ups".
You have to admit, though, that your average anime series is not very good. In fact I'd say that manga are often better than their anime adaptations, with a few notable exceptions.
sputnikpanicpuppet 1 year ago
@sputnikpanicpuppet that Ghost in the Shell for some is difficult to understand may have something to do with that the makers had an original artistic vision and didn't use the hollywood cookie-cutter. some people cant handle that., they need everything explained and ready (also some might have limited brainspace and no frame of reference for deeper techno-human philosophy)

@JeffBilkins

SilvrDragon52 1 year ago 158
@SilvrDragon52 Actually-skilled style?
Are you telling me that good looking cgi doesn't require skill?
fiveMIRrOrs 1 year ago
@fiveMIRrOrs

Agreed! Humans are the ghost in the machine.

i wouldn't go so far as to say that everything needs to be hand drawn, the vast majority of animation looks better now than it did back then, and look at byousoku 5CM o.0 ITS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! but i would like to see some more intelligent animation coming out of japan some time soon. there hasnt been much to match GITS since it came out.
surruk 1 year ago 3
@surruk true enuff. though they do have a few good things. not totally on par with GITS per se., but they do have some good stories. like Clannad or Arikawa under the bridge, admittedly those and a few others are more anime -sh like drawn. but the stories by CLAMP and like xxxholic / Tsubasa. and a few others are actually worth watching. if just for the story content.

@SilvrDragon52 One of my Fav's is Ninja Scroll. I also like Sword and the Stranger.
mrkrinkle699 1 year ago
@mrkrinkle699 I like Ninja Scroll too, though while awesome I find it doesn't really hold up after multiple viewings. Plenty of action, but not a very rich plot. Never heard of Sword and the Stranger, I'll have to check it out - thanks for the name drop. B)

@SilvrDragon52 Definately! The majority of this film is what inspired "The Matrix".

@SilvrDragon52 it also looks allot more detailed (in comparison to newer mechanical designs that tend to be more stylized)

@SilvrDragon52 Is there any kind of hand-drawn anime in our time? I mean one that is really produced with the hands and not altered by computer dudes?
Id love to watch that! Cheers
