The greatest singer/song writer, storyteller, musician and poet of all time. RIP Dan..thanks for the music..I dedicate this song to you John..all my love to you..
how much i love his music...words forming cerebral images...remaining in your head...just a note or two can bring an entire song that stays with me for hours or days...so sad that such a talent is susceptible to something as base as a disease which we can't cure...thanks for the album here...
Now that I've listened to this song for the fiftieth time, I think I finally understand the deep meaning he conveys. Wow- please let this be the mantra foir all couples.
This has always been my favorite Dan Fogelberg song. I was privileged to see him play it live just before the birth of my youngest son in 1991. Now I don't even have his mother anymore after 32 years of marriage and I wonder why I couldn't "Make Love Stay". I used to love to play and sing this song but now it just hurts. I miss you Dan, RIP.
It was in 1991, that I first saw an solo, having had seen him with his great band in 1985 at Madison Square Garden! I loved this video coming out after I had just seen him about Sept, to Nov, 1991--I forgot, I lost the ticket stubs from one too many moves in my life! I got to see Dan one more time in 1997, but never got to see him in the new Millenium due to my many back procures and surgery! I'm so sorry I never got to see him one last time before his death! Peace and Love to All! XXXBobbyK
A very beautiful and tender song, which I believe most can relate to ... how do you make this love last ? How can you make sure you don't lose touch with each other ? How do you keep the 'fire' going .... not letting it get too high to handle, or so low that it will extinct ? I guess it's a bit like a real fire ...handle with care and respect and be in tune with what it needs to keep it going ...(respect, sincerity, openness, honesty, tolerance, and good communication) ..but who am I to talk ..?
I often come back and listen to this song and realized that because Dan is gone our beautiful Colorado Rocky mountains will never be the same without him.
i saw Dan in 1978 (i think it was). An acoustic evening w/Dan Fogelberg. Hartford Ct.
It was the best show I've ever seen. When he played you could hear a pin drop. When he finished each song the venue erupted. He went back and forth between piano and guitar. I'll always remember before he played "same auld lang syne he said to the crowd "and by the way... this really happened" Miss you much Dan, and Thank you.
...I once heard losing a tear is like showing your love for someone and when I hear this song I can only believe that Dan Fogelberg was sharing his love for humanity through his music.
Dan Fogelberg was a gift to the world. One of the most inspired and inspiring musicians of this century. And often overlooked. He seemed untainted by the world and fame and so did his music.
well said. He was so under rated, but he was such a private man anyhow...my all time favorite. Beautiful voice; mind and heart. And great talent. He is missed
How this song takes me back to his concert with Sharon and Billy Etch. in Dallas when we were all lived there in Dallas and times were better for us 3.
How I miss them and seeing Dan perform and the good ole years when I hear this song! Thanks for letting me be part of seeing this video and to them dragging me along as a 3rd wheel at the concert of a lifetime with Dan Fogelberg!
Elusive as dreams Barely remembered in the morning Love like a phantom flies But held in the heart It pales like the empty smile adorning A statue with sightless eyes. Moments fleet, taste sweet within the rapture When precious flesh is greedily consumed But mystery's a thing not easily captured And once deceased not easily exhumed. Now that we love Now that the lonely nights are over How do we make love stay?
Dan Fogleberg's music will live on in each of the lives he touched so deeply and profoundly. I wish for all of us who knew his music or knew the man personally that God had let Dan stay but despite that his music will forever stay and forever have meaning for so many.
I'm from Dan's hometown of Peoria, Illinois, and how proud I am that I share that with a man who could write a song like this (and all his other beautiful, rocking, or inspiring songs). Growing up, I was always aware that he came from my hometown, but now as I get older I really am discovering the beauty of this soul and the music he left for us.
This is what we strive for each and every day. Make Love Stay says it all. Saw Dan in B-ham, AL in '74 and have never been the same. Friend, mentor....rememberance is sweet. Thanks for sharing your heart and wisdom with us...for we are better persons because of your gifts. Peace my friend. c
So amazing... just let me melt in my lover's arms in front of the fire while Dan's tunes play in the background. What could be better? (Immortality aside.)
Just sent this video to my daughter in England....she's 22 and in school and I wanted to remind her of the great days of songwriters/singers. DF was one of the best...always told a story, sad, happy and memorable. She grew up with the music my wife and I shared and this is one of the songs. Sigh....beautiful song. >>a St. Louis guy.
Ya' know....every since my friends and I saw Dan in Tulsa circa '73, I've felt like I had a big brother and best friend, singing just to me each time I heard his voice and his words of life.
This song has, and always will, remind that there are wonderful men out there...that write, and sing, of love.
Goodbye for now dear Dan, but not for long....we'll all sing in the same concert hall someday.

Beautiful chord progression and finger work not to mention the poetry...wow, the poetry.
. I like this version better than the orchestrated album version because it reveals what an incredible musician he was.
.
National treasure/poet laureate, somewhere he and Jim Croce are having a great jam session.

How do we make love stay?
Now that we know
The fire can burn bright or merely smolder
How do we keep it from dying away?
