i have not figured out how to master the Emperor's fighting style... the attacks are too slow... any tips?

Well I don't really main the Emperor but I'll try giving some tips anyways.

For his HP attacks, Flare both ground and aerial should be equipped. Flare is Emperor's main HP attack. Becareful of his ground flare aka the blue one because it can be reflected back at you. Starfall is also a must but only equip the aerial one since there's really no point in equipping for both ground and air. Starfall is great for adding pressure to your opponent causing them slip up by walking into your other traps.

If you manage to unleash a Starfall, then you can also use lighting crest to trap them after they get hit by starfall as you can see in my video. This allows you to either use flare for hp damage or use some more brave attacks, while they are stunned by lighting crest.

For his brave attacks I'm not totally sure what is essential but both ground and aerial lighting crests are a must. Mines are still useful even if they can be avoided/dashed through easily.

Bombard? or whatever it's called is also useful because you can apparently reflect back your own flare with it? I never tried it myself but others apparently have.

Anyways, as you should know the Emperor's fighting style is Trap Master and is also a great character that puts pressure onto the opponent. You should also try watching other PvP matches with Emperor, as they'll be more useful than me telling you.
