Dunno about any of this crap. I have an N55 Msport Coupe and its a great car. (7 Spd DCT) Tested a boxster and boxster s before I decided and bought the dub. For the money the boxster lost out on power and acceleration. (including the S, gutless by comparison). BONUS... the N55 sounds fabulous. However I'd love a Boxster S with an N55..........who knows? As for the N54.... (four words.... High Pressure Fuel Pump).
@yourfast07 It really depends. Depends on the tune and depends on how aggressive each car is tuned. I'm sure you can tune both the N54 (twin turbo) and N55 (single turbo) to the same levels at whatever "stage 2" is. Generally, there are more tune options available for the N54 since it's been around for a while. I know several folks over at 1addicts and e90post.com who have well over 400 WHP on both the N54 and N55. Best bet is to hit up the forums and do some research.
@crooner12 No one has gotten a N55 over 375 whp.The N55 can only support about 385 whp... The N54 can definately, easily get over 400 whp, 440 whp ... Vish has N55 tune and its the max, no stg 3 or anything, its only making 329-335 whp, on par with stg 2 N54 + a few small bolt-ons...The JB3 N55 is only 305 whp which is = to JB's own JB2 tune. The larger single turbo N55 will make more power all across the power band where the (N54 & it's 2 turbos), (like a supercharger) make good low & mid pwr
@aqwayne Not necessarily. They designed the turbo to have chambers that focus the exhaust pulses from the cylinders so that there is a continual flow of exhaust gas. The design is supposed to minimize turbo lag. I felt a slight lag, but it's hardly noticeable, unlike cars like the STi and Evo, where boost comes on all of a sudden.
@crooner12 It's called twin scroll or two blades each in pairs instead of typical turbos which have one blade The impeller has 6-10 blades. Turbo lag is more promounced in the N55 until the car is driven in a slightly aggressive manner for 6.2 miles or fully warmed up so the ECU learn the driving style. The N54 did not have this. Once the N55 is warmed, driven moderately aggressive off the line it'll then be quicker, only slightly more than the N54... But it also makes more pwr 4-6800k
@aqwayne. No. If you haven't already, read the reviews on the N55 vs N54 engine. The N55 hits peak boost at 1200rpm compared to 1400rpm with the N54, so the single turbo engine actually has less turbo lag. Also, Car & Driver said the new engine is 1 sec faster to 140mph. Pretty cool...
On the N54 135i, the left flap opens after 30-40 seconds or so on cold-start. So, the exhaust flows through both outlets at all RPM, not just above X,XXX RPM. Not sure if this is normal or not. I thought you needed the golf-tee mod for that, but this car does NOT have the golf-tee mod.
Obvious the N55 will be louder considering it's running only one turbo. Although it's not so much the cold starts that interests me, I would like to see some fly bys, in cars, and side by sides.
@RFreigeldorff Not sure of the conditions required to open the flap. I think it's RPM related, but lately I've noticed that the flap on my 135i stays open regardless once it's warmed up. My car is 100% stock.
I have the N54 135i with BMW Performance exhaust and bugger does it sound loud in the mornings @ a cold-start! Garage only amplifies the sound!

try putting the camera directly behind the n54 like you did with the n55

Also technically the N55 makes 306 hp but only 295 lb/ft tq.... The N54 was 300hp and 298 tq

no secondary cats on the n55......

Aggressive, I'm not sure. The N55 sounds like a motor boat to me, and not in a good way.

I get that the N55 saves more gas, but does this mean more turbo lag? (Due to the 1 big turbo)

Yes, all N54 and N55 applications have the flap outside of the IS setups, which use the MW Performance Exhausts.

does the 1 have a flap in the exhast system that remains closed blow 2xxxrpm as does the 335i? looks like the left one is inactive at idle.
