it wasnt in existence when india was partitioned.

its parent organisation, the RSS, opposed the partition tooth and nail.

BJP represents a thought process, an idea. it existed way before 1980 in the form of RSS and even before RSS (pre 1936 era ) even in the form of original Congressmans such as Tilak ,Agarkar, savarkar Subhash Chandra ,.. After Tilak died and as Gandhi/Neheru rose to power , Congress lost its original soul which later transitioned into RSS and more recently to BJP.
