Although I think what he played was definitely good, I still think the whole concept of a drummer playing the national anthem by himself (yes, I do realize he played it with a backing track) was kind of strange. Even though he did have a backing track of a band playing along with him, I think from a live performance standpoint it looks kind of weird. Not bashing Chad Smith at all, just the concept.

An instrument such as a marimba or vibraphone would be a melodic instrument in that they have tuned bars that produce notes when struck. Personally, I've never been a fan of any "interpretation" of the national anthem, preferring the original version over anything you'd commonly see at a sporting event, and this is no exception. He's merely acting as accompaniment to a recording.
