Demolished buildings never exactly "collapse into their footprints". "Collapse into their footprints" is just a figure of speech to indicate that the building did not fall on one side. They never do "collapse into their footprints" after controlled demolition if they are that tall.

Well, they didn't "explode" but the debris from the collapse was indeed forced outward (it couldn't go inward), and the concrete was pulverized by the kinetic energy of the collapses. Explosives are actually inefficient at turning concrete into fine dust.

oh, well they do fall rather symetrically, and building 7 fell in just over 6 seconds, quite suddenly... Whether the building fell symetrically or not, it's still quite astounding that an entire thing hit the ground at about the same rate of accelleration as gravity... wouldn't you expect there be a bit of friction, say about 47 floors of steel and concrete worth? I'd expect that to add at least a second or two.
