The lyric in the song: And the telex machine is kept so clean as it types to a waiting world... is a reference to how Geldof learned of the events. This was, after all, 1979 and technology was not what it is today. Geldof read the report from the Telex machine at a radio station interview and then he wrote the song. The young lady, Brenda, did however, say that the reasoning was because 'I don't like Mondays'

One of her statements, during the 7 hour standoff with police was that she did it because she was "bored" and stated "I don't like Mondays." The BTR's were in town and were appalled by the story. The song is a sad tribute to the absurdity of such a shocking response. Spencer remains in prison.

In Australia we have a no gun at all for the general public and even if u do get a shooters licenses the guns have to be in a safe locked up and most of all u have to be a farm owner to get this shooters permit still people get shot ,, oh I also saw sir Gelgof at the Sydney Casino 2011 and his show was just as i expected awesome

I'm not American, but I do think that the easiness of buying guns does not have a lot to do with crime rate. More people die from gun shot wounds in my country than in USA and we have a very high crime rate,but buying a gun is not easy here.The criminals, though,find ways to purchase smuggled guns. THey use heavy guns,such as AK47 and M-16 to contol their neighborhood in Rio like warlords.In the end,it has more to do with poverty and lack of opportunity

You are correct, though that many felt the B-town Rats were performing a song in poor taste when they released this song about the event.

Very funnny, in my country (like in many others), it is very hard to get a weapon. And our cime rate is definitely not as high as the American one... @dieterturner Brenda Spencer hat (mit 16) an einem Montagmorgn von ihrem Zimmerfenster aus auf den benachbarten Schulhof geschossen. Ich weiß nicht, wie viele verletzt bzw getötet wurden, jedenfalls hat sie ihre Tat damit begründet, dass Montage langweilig sind und die Schießerei den Tag belebt hat, oder so. Völlig krank. Kranke Menschen gibts überall, aber Gott sei Dank ist es bei uns nicht leicht, an Waffen zu kommen.

You cannot compare our disgusting empire to that of other countries. We have higher murder rates because of issues that have nothing to do with guns. Guns are actually one of the last things some people have in neighborhoods to protect themselves. Do you think the criminals here give up guns when theyre illegal...?
