We lost to Dibaba as well as an Algerian in the 800m. Everything else fell in our basket. We had two clean sweeps. The Men's 800m was a classic display of our mid distance prowess. Rudisha dropped a 1.42.88. It was jaw dropping. The entire stadium rose to salute his gallant performance. He was followed by the indefatigable Alfred Yego Kirwa who never disappoints and the youthful Jackson Kivuva won bronze. We also swept the men's 5,000m in style...

Dibaba beat Masai in the Beijing Olympics. Since then, Masai beat Dibaba in New York in '09 I believe as well as Bydgoszcz, Poland World Cross Country Championships early this year. My point Starcraftiskool is that the way these two Ethiopians reigned in the period between '02 and '08 is gone. They have real competition and occasionally, they'll lose to these two girls or even other athletes (who also include fellow Ethiopians.)

Today, there is no much difference between the two just like there is no much difference between Dibaba and Masai. Dibaba's problem is more complex in that she is 25 years old while Masai is only 20. In their last 4 meets, the outcome is 3-1 in favour of Masai. Cont....

I concur. There is an almost 12 second difference between their personal bests. I don't for a moment disagree that Defar was at her best in '05, '06 and '07 when she ran a World Record (14:11.15). These girls are the same age but Defar bloomed earlier. Also, Cheruiyot put aside her running career to concentrate on her education in Kenya. She has gone up to form four (the final year in high school in Kenya) which was her goal. By then, Defar was burning the track ...cont.

@cavarre, We, (the KEnyans) have figured out the Ethiopian women. We are at par right now if not better. Between '02 and '06, the Ethiopian women used to break away in the last lap setting a furious pace and leaving the Kenyans far behind. Not any more. Dibaba is still good but so is Masai. Any race that involves Defar/Cheruiyot and/or Dibaba/Masai will always come down to the wire and can go any way. That is how good Kenyan women have become. Berlin 2009 was no fluke.

On July 8, 2010, that would be a week ago, Cheruiyot beat Defar in the women's 3000m. Infact, Defar was third.

Another KEnyan, David Rudisha is on course to break the 800m World Record. Yesterday, Saturday July 10, 2010, he ran a crazy 1:41.51.

The World record is 1:41.11 held by Dannish Wilson Kipketer. Rudisha is just a few steps off the World REcord and will surely get it perhaps this year. I surely hope he does.

2. Kenenisa Bekele (the greatest of them all by a kilometre)

These four guys are great. However, only Belele is invincible. Everyone else is beatable. WE'll never beat Bekele at his best.

We've however figured out the Ethiopian women. We'll counter Dibaba with 20 year old Masai.

Elvan beat lornah by 17 seconds in 10.000 metres in the european cup last month easily.31.36 -31.53 so elvan is much stronger than lornah.and also lornah cant sprint so she doesnt have any chance.lornah will push the race and this will weaken tirunesh.but it will benefit elvan who is not only very strong but also very fast considering her 3.58.26 1500 metres

elvan lost this race because she still had an injury and couldnt sprint.she is very fast regarding her 3.58.26 1500m.she's recoverin and if she recovers completely, she will outsprint dibaba in beijing olympics.this april she won european 10.000 cup easily by overtaking lornah.elvan is comin back and will also pose a great threat to defar at 5000.If you watch carefully she slows down apparently in the last 200 metres cause her achilles really hurt and had to slow down as she said after the race.
