the first 5 takes he descended the stairs before the pyro's went off. in this clip, the pyro goes off while he is still at the top. then they cut to one of the earlier takes.

it actually looks like the 6th take where his hair caught fire is the one that was used. the pyrotechnics go off before he ascends the stairs, then they cut to an earlier take.

I saw the video of the accident, and it's pretty intense. You can see the top of his head was burned away, just leaving a bloody flesh crown, like a monk. Strangely, he didn't even notice his hair was on fire for 5 to 10 sec. Too much Jerry Curl activator.
You can't blame Pepsi or the director for his addiction. Michael already had issues long before he did this commercial. The painkiller addiction was his own doing, nobody forced him to take them.

I heard that they didn't put stuff in his hair just because of the sparks and they said it was a fire hazard so he didn't have activator in his head.
ALSO THEY HAD THE NERVE TO USE THE TAKE OF HIS ACCIDENT IN DA COMMERCIAL. on the other takes he walks down then the sparks go off. they used the one where the director told him to wait and that's the one that burned him. Other wise he would have been half way down the stairs when the sparks went off. they cut it before u see da flames.

When you watch the footage of the fire, his hair is already on fire at the top of the stairs.
I wonder if he was already taking something because it burned for quite a while before he did his spin at the bottom of the stairs. That's when it seems like he noticed the flames and I guess the pain. Most people would have felt their hair on fire pretty early on. His hair burned right down to the skin.

phillydisco - no, it's very possible to have a serious accident involving burn victims and they don't know it until it's too late. i've worked with burn victims for almost 20 years.
it's the fault of the person running the pyrotechnics. the person set them off too soon. a very tragic accident caused by negligence.

In fact the pyrotechnics were supposed to happen after Michael went down the stairs, NOT before/during especially considering how flammable all those hair chemicals are for the jheri curl (hair style for African Am. men in the mid 80s.)
Its kind of cruel how Pepsi still used footage of that horrendous sixth take. Kind of like using footage seconds before a car accident.

i remember back in the day when this commerical came out and mj was still recovering for god's sake. i was so disgusted at the commercial and pepsi from that point on.
and yes, mj deliberately was careful about the products used in his hair - this was negligence on the part of pepsi who had an employee set the pyrotechnics off too soon.
makes you wonder what course he would've taken had this tragic accident not ever occurred at all.
