The Clash never sold out. The genre they were using (punk) was only about 4 years old when they started mixing it with other styles of music. Hence, you can't really say they sold out because punk wasn't even a consolidated kind of music at the time. So, in a way, what they were actually doing was trying to "improve" punk by experimentation. And I must say they succeeded, London Calling was a blast.
