  • Really, how can you say Tracy doesn't do blues and gospel influenced stuff? "Mother Earth" is a straight ahead blues, "I'm Satisfied," her signature "Down So Low," etc, etc. show a definite gospel influence, plus her voice is always blues-drenched. I can't think of the titles of the the things I didn't care for but there were a bunch - NOT the country stuff, which was fine. I confess I'm a horn player, so I listen for chord changes, stuff I'd want to solo on, so there's my taste.

  • @bixntram Are you replying to me? If so, you completely misunderstand my comment. I'm saying she doesn't JUST do blues or gospel influenced stuff. Please read more carefully.

  • I will add that, even though I'm a big Tracy fan, she too has sung a lot of material that wasn't that great, but what she's done right has made up for it.

  • @bixntram I could listen to Tracy sing the phonebook, but I think her taste is pretty close to impeccable. I'd be curious to learn what you don't think is particularly good. Of course, she doesn't just do blues or gospel influenced stuff, so maybe you didn't care for the country stuff or some of the pop balladry. As far as Janis comparisons go, well, she never understood them herself. Tracy was never that raw and ragged. Not that raw and ragged is necessarily bad--just not Tracy.

  • Damn, she's still ten times better than Janis in her prime! Wail, Tracy!

  • @bixntram thats like comparing aples to oranges -two very different styles and very far apart in genre... both artists are wonderful

  • @triptoheaveandho I don't seem them as being that far apart in genre, but I don't mean to quibble. They were both big-voiced "belters" who did blues and gospel-influenced material (Bonnie Raitt is probably the most successful example). In truth I never cared for most of the songs Janis sang - just a matter of taste. She sounded screechy and hysterical to me - But certainly, she had her following. May she R.I.P.

  • Nobody better than Tracy, ever since Mother Earth - what, twenty years earlier? She just got better. This is a great clip.

  • very fine

  • One of the best. This IS the blues.

  • she makes this look and sound so easy.

  • Wow just as I was ecstatic over seeing Robben, there was David S! Was lucky enuf tom see Robben in a small venue in the early 70's with the L.A. Express!!

  • Dave Sanborn Sax, Marcus Miller Bass, Robben Ford Guitar

  • Just amazing! Robben way back in the Strat period.

  • I love this singer!! Discovered her on the album "Sing it" with Irma Thomas and Marcia Ball. What a trio! Then, I find out she has her own performances. Thank you for posting this!1

  • She has a number of CDs available thru online sources like amazonor you can get autograped CDs from her directly by going to her website. Ytube doesn't like posters to set up links, but you can easily guess what the site address is. Tracy often posts on her message board. How many other artists do THAT? Check it out.

  • I liked the song that i heard so much that I did go to her website. Very interesting and informative. I also decided to do a video myself on her song, "Send me someone to love" which is somewhere on Youtube. Thanks to your posting of "Miss you like the devil", I probably would never have thought of doing a music video on her. Thanks again!

  • Thank you for the "thank you," but I didn't post this clip myself. But I too am grateful to Kbelna who did. It's one of Tracy's best.

  • Tracy, we want MORE!! ;-)

  • This has to be the most under-rated woman in music. I have been a fan since the original Mother Earth album. Although I'm a big Joplin fan, she's got nothing on Nelson!

  • Mercy! I remember when this aired on television and it also was my introduction to Tracy--what a power house. I ran out and bought the album the next day. Thanks for this post!

  • Which Tracy album was that, Lee. She had quite a few out (both solo and w/ Mother EArth by that point).

  • The song was on her solo album entitled: In The Here and Now.

  • Oh, that much I knew. But Tracy seemed to imply on her website that this clip came from the late '80s--well before ITHAN was released. There were lots of tracks on that record that she had been doing live for years, so it didn't seem impossible that this clip was done WAAY before the record. But from the way you put it, I'm guessing this vid actually originated around the same time as the record. Thanks for the input.

  • As you no doubt know the 80s were a prolonged dry spell for TN, recording-wise. I was so glad when she signed w/ Rounder in the 90s and wound up releasing some of her best work for that label.

  • Yes. This performance was from a weekly show called 'Night Music' that aired on Sunday evenings I believe around 1989. If you put a search in for "night music" I think you should come up with several other artists who performed live on this program, it was just great. All of the artists performed with the house band--no prerecorded tracks.

  • Luvv You xoxoxo!!!!!!!!!

  • What a great find!

  • So here it is. Seven months later and my girlfriend just dumped me. I suspect that for the next several weeks I'm going to watch this clip about eighteen times a day.

At least Tracy tells the truth.

  • Tracy is so strong in this clip that no one cares that Robben Ford is on guitar and I think that's Nathan East on bass. How good is that? Twenty years later and I still miss this tv show.

  • Yeah, that was a very good program, too good to last on commercial tv.

  • I know what you're saying. But I wish to hell Tracy had RECORDED with this ensemble. That'd be something to treasure. Sanborn, Ford, East, and Nelson. Chicago Blues Who?

  • Herr von K, i like 2 thank u for bringing Tracy's work 2 my attention. I knew her name, but not her work. This woman is fantastic and what a great band. Ive always been a big fan of Robben Ford.

Tks again. Good music is hard 2 find nowadays.

    Youtube is great!!

    Greets!

  • Marcus Miller on bass

  • Actually that is Marcus Miller on bass, he also was the musical director for the house band on the show.

  • nice :)

  • She's really, really good! What a talent!

  • Im a big fan of Tracy since her Mother Earth days. I saw her in a small blues joint next to UC Berkley campus more than 25 years ago.

  • it amazes me that at the age of sixty tracy still has such an incredible voice, to my ears there is no loss of power, soul, honesty, everything miss nelson has had and i've been finding unending and unmatchable pleasure in for those 40 years before mentioned. the best, truest talent i have ever heard.

  • Thank you so much for putting this up!!! TRACY is incredibe and should be known by all....the woman has one of the greatest sounds of the century!!

  • This woman's voice is something else. After more than 40 years in the biz, she's still going strong. Thanks for posting!
