It's called deconstruction. You take a "standard", a leit motif, a riff, and then you make what your brain requires if your fingers allow you to. It's called go beyond. The suburbs of the sound, then back downtown. The intricate path is what matters. Not everybody can follow
@Tarantulus666 : You have completely misconstrued and misinterpreted the intentions of what I have said. And your inclination to be so easily offended to such a general statement shows a lack of openmindedness. I personally choose not to judge things as "not having order" when I haven't given the subject sufficient exploration and study. For example, if I didn't speak Arabic, it could sound like gibberish to me, but that doesn't mean it doesn't make sense to someone else, and jazz is the same.
@IcedPhoenix666 Because Mehldau is a jazz player, and jazz is about celebrating sounds that would otherwise be considered "wrong". Personally, I think it's beautiful, but you're entirely welcome to disagree.
@SpawnofHastur Thanks for the explanation. I have no problem with it personally. I just found it strange since I do not listen to jazz and am not used to that kind of sound.
@albinbjarhall no, they aren't, hopefully eventually they will be accessible to the public. for the meantime, you can download the mp3s of this performance (including the 30 or so KILLER seconds cut off from the beginning of this video!) on a page that will show up first in a google search for "rest in bits brad mehldau"
@karlgrafstrom 'course he does, don't you? it's so easy to draw reductive comparisons... of course brad "stands on the shoulders" of more than just one Great Pianist, but that doesn't exclude him from the category
@TheStormFinder that title is still up for grabs. i have heard playing from jacky terrasson that matches aynthing from Brad' Mehldau . technique, feel, orginality, versatility. arrangements, composition. i was a little disappointed at his Köln solo show last year. a little too inaccessible and motiv driven, even for a pianist and longtime jazz listener like myself. but that was only one show. brad is all over youtube. watch for the next flurry of activity from jt. a feeling it's gonna be good.
@markmarktarmann mehldau or terrasson? i will see redman and mehldau in Ff.m on the 24th. accessing my old calif. sprache," i am like so STOKED dude". lol . whichever pianist it is, i am sure you will love it! cheers, and yes please do let me know what you think. i will play in Bad Driburg at the park hotel.this weekend, if you feel like going way out to the outbacks. i've also played at the Bremen Park Hotel.
Oh no, I definitely prefer Brad's version. Leszek Możdżer was excellent at the beginning of his career in the 90-ies, but he has not developed so much as Brad has. A matter of taste perhaps, but that's the impression I have.
I love Brad's work so much & I truly admire him but to be honest I prefer (Leszek) Mozdzer's version of "Smells like teen spirit". For those who don't know this talented jazz pianist from Poland I can recommend his music, especially played as Mozdzer/Fresco/Danielsson trio.
Damn that piano sounds good. Mehldau too.

People never like what they can't understand. Cacophony is a matter of perspective.
jazzychanny 3 months ago
@jazzychanny This is a very pretentious reply, and why Jazz will never go mainstream. it's essentially "you're too dumb to get it".
You may want to reflect on that.

Just shows that 90's music had Art and Passion. Wish musicians and Music was cared for like it was before :( sad...
