The pilot, if not killed outright by the impact, probably drowned. There's very little chance he could get out of the plane in time. You can see that already at the end of this clip the aircraft is completely below the surface. With the injuries sustained in the impact and possible unconciousness, very slim chances, very slim.

Look at the smoke trail at .38-.39 looks/ sounds like engine stumbles or major control input disturbs the smooth smoke trail. He was in trouble before that. He recovered too low but may have been able to pull it out if he had another 30 ft. under him. But he didn't -....shame. I think the pilot survived. Cockpit and airframe look amazingly intact.

Good pilot, made a simple mistake. Did the pilot survive? Skipping across the water absorbed a lot of the impact energy, but the initial deceleration on contact with the water could have been fatal anyway. A crying shame about the plane though.

The Pitts is a small airplane with a lot of drag. When you fall behind the power curve it takes an act of God to get speed built up again. It just falls out of the sky. Luckily the plane hit flat on the water and bounced. It's hard to see out of the Pitts with all the wings and big front end so it's probably a good idea to have an extra hundred feet of altitude to play with.
