well guys, u have to knoe tht some moves are not for fighting but to prove strenght, coordination, and agility. the fact tht u can perform those moves, proves great strenght...
first: i practie muay thai,a bit mma,and practiced wing chun,i also sparr with taekwondo guys from time to time...
it pretty much depends on your opponent/partner ,if he does capoeira it could work cause hell probably try the same,if 2 traditional taekwonde guys sparr with each other,it could work too sometimes,cause they´ll also try to keep the distance an "jumpkick" you..
also if you fight somebody who doesnt really know how to fight (and by that i mean,not fighting in his discipline,but in "real combat" ,which would be all distances,and not that much rules..)
in taekwondo and the most other asian martial arts you dont really learn how to fight practicioners of other martial arts,so most of the times the techniques only really work if you do them at a partner who pratices the same martial art.
and also taekwondo is a lot about aesthetics and style,a lot of the techniques look really fancy and stuff but are not effective at all..
sorry for sounding like a "mma fanboy" here,but to see what really works(not necessarily on the street,but in a match with only little limitations ´cause of the rules) you should watch mma fights (strikeforce,UFC are pretty popular and have the top fighters)
and so for the sparring:
if it workds depends on in which discipline you do the sparring.
@moos14 personnaly as a taekwondo fan and also being aware of how mma fighters fight. id say tht some moves taekwondo do arnt rly for combat but the fact to be able to perform them proves strength, coordination and agility rather than utility in a actual fight. its impresif but the self defense is deadly,its like for exemple, a ninjitsu fighter would probably lose in the octogone but if a mma fighter fights by ninjitsu rules, i assure you the mma fighter would probably be killed in an instant.
very little rules,so mma fighter fights better without restrictions
b) ninjitsu rules: maybe the mma fighter loses,but then thats because of the rule-set..i think a mma fighter would also lose in a soccer match,but im talking about combat...
@moos14 switch it around and its true. ninjitsu has less rules than mma believe it or not. ninjitsu is about taking your opponent down as quickly and efficiently as possible by any means possible. although its been majorly changing modern times.
@junyboy5 Yea, most arial kicks were actually meant to knock people off of horseback. It's really impractical to be in the air when sparring, and usually doesn't end well for the person, if said person is sparring someone who knows what they're doing.
That being said, I enjoy practicing arial kicks as much as the next guy, but I'm not going to go to a competition and do a 540 kick. it just shows that you have the balance and cordination to be a beast I guess.
@moos14 taekwondo isn't alot about style and aesthetics. Yes they have alot of ariel kicks that are useless in real combat. but guess what? taekwondo is actually very practical. also a professional mma sports fighter could definitely win against a professional taekwondo sports fighter. but there are in fact people that learn taekwondo for practical uses. taekwondo on the streets is very different from sports. you just haven't seen it (proby never will)

How effective/practical is the butterfly kick in real combat? I know how to do it, but I don't think I'd ever use it.

@The95thLegion
how do you define real combat?

@moos14
Let's just say... would it work well in a sparring match?

@The95thLegion

good question,i´ll try to help a bit:

if you fight a wrestler/grappler,it wont,

@The95thLegion
