  • You should try a real Sound Canvas module.

MS Synth IS absolutely terrible, with most sounds screwed up because of a poor rendering engine.

VSC is slightly better, but still worse than real hardware Sound Canvas.

However, more recent Roland software implementations of Sound Canvas modules (such as Hyper Canvas) sound much better, quite close to real hardware sound modules.

Yamaha's software synths, such as SYXG-50, sound very decent too, compared to their hardware counterparts.

  • @arachnosoft I do now have an SC-88Pro, it even has the option of SC-55 sounds in SC-55 mode.

Microsoft midi synth is rather harsh, I admit I found some or even most of the sounds are unusable for recording plus you only get 128 GM sounds ( no GS variations ).

At least VSC was GS, but still not much better.

Another advantage to hardware is you don't have to worry about Operating system software incompatibility.

  • No personally I prefer microsoft midi synth or Roland virtual sound canvas, but this video demonstrates that you can porduce decent sounds from soundfonts but with microsoft midi synth and Roland VSC at least none of the sounds are terrible or at least I think so.When I do basic midi sequencing I use Microsoft midi synth,Roland VSC,a Yamaha PSR-295 and a Roland MC-505 synthesizer and I pick and mix to enhance the sound quality.
