I'm so excited, I love Hummingbirds, they are new to me, there has never been any in my area until last summer. You probably saved its life. During migration hummers sometimes fly until they burn up all carbos and body fat. If that happens, they are so tired they cannot eat and will die. Only a small percentage actually survive annual migrations. People have reported seeing them fall from the sky during these times. On one occasion, I was lucky enough to rescue one that had run out of energy by feeding it sugar water from a tea spoon. What a wonderful feeling, knowing I had helped save something so small.
When a hummer comes inside...just grab a branch from outside quickly....the hummingbird recognizes it and lands. Then you carry the stick outside, bird and all. It only takes a minute or so and the bird doesn't waste energy flying around looking for a way out.

That is precious, HB are new to me, I never see them in Ma..lately one comes by everyday, I love him-her.....got feeder, but yellow jackets took it over, I'm very sad. poor HB....what can I do to prevent YJ from swarming. I must feed my HB.../so cute
Sounds like the feeder might be too full. Reduce the level of syrup and make sure there is no residue on the surface of the feeder. That should put it out of reach of the yellow jackets and, in frustration, they may fly off and commit hari kari (sepuku).
@YourFan: if the bird has a broken wing, I'm not sure there's much you can do. Hummingbirds need to eat every few hours. The "nectar" is one part sugar to four parts water. Bring it to a boil to dissolve the sugar and then LET IT COOL!!!
I just rescued a baby humming birds that my cats were playing with...hes not alot injured he just has a broken wing and cant fly..im not sure what to do..Any advice..Please help..And where can you buy nectar?
