Every time I watch this, it shakes me to my bones, I get chills I cannot shrug away, it brings a tear to my eye. I am proud to say I'm canadian. And a true and die hard oilers fan. Nothing is going to change that.
Fantastic job by one of the all time great anthem singers. I had chills running thru my body many a time in the coliseum. The fans in Edmonton are among the best anywhere.
As an American, this really lays bare the fact that Canada's national anthem kicks my country's anthem's ass. America's got word salad with an unhittable high note. Canada's got great lyrics that everyone in the country can sing.
i love seeing scenes like this. makes me proud to be a hockey fan - what a classy bunch of people singing each other's anthems and being a loud but damn respectful crowd. :)
I don't think people notice this but our team was never good enough to go to the finals, it was all the fans that gave them all the energy to play the games they did. Out of all the games in the playoffs that year for Edmonton our record away was 7-6 and our home record was 8-3. It was all the fans (exaggerated), if we make the playoffs this year we need to be as supportive as we were that year.
I was at that game, and although this video is the best quality I have found for it (props to Eigh1Eighty2 on that) it still doesn't truly represent the energy and crazy-ness of the fans that night. My ears were ringing the next day, as if I had been at a hard rock concert, standing right near the speaker. Probably the best time I have ever had at an Oilers game... and I didn't even need a beer. Sober or not, we were all acting the same... CRAZY!!
@corehunter1 No when the Montreal fans boo'd the US National Anthem unprovoked like they've done scores of times like the douches they are. Search: Boston's response to Montreal booing the US National Anthem 4/15/04
@Safeco1999 rush through? Its a fuckin oilers game it's not like you pay to hear the anthem. Its not like theres aspecific speed ur supposed to sing it
I fucking love how people come on to a video of a national anthem and start debating politics over an anthem at a hockey game that took place five years ago stfu go vent to a shrink you morons it's a fucking YouTube video no one cares what you think about what country.
@Safeco1999 Paul Lorrieou is one of the best anthem singers in the NHL and he was the first one to ever let the fans sing the anthem. He is a pioneer and a hero in the eyes of Edmontonians. Fucking shit
@cameronlorentz One of the best??? Are you kidding?? He sounds like someone who has diarreah and he's trying to rush through the anthem in the worst way possible to get to the toilet. He's TERRIBLE!
You want the best- go listen to Lauren Hart or someone. This moron in Edmonton is garbage. I'm surprised he actually let fans sing the anthem. I suppose before him, no one in the stadium was allowed to sing the anthem. He's a piece of crap to everyone outside of Edmonton.
@ungs123 You should be. I'm American and live about 5 blocks from the white house. Trust me, nearly all of us are very happy to have Canada as a neighbor. I appreciate the respect shown while our national anthem was sung ( pathetic song that it is - please, the tune is an old English drinking song ). I was truly moved crossing into B.C. going to Vancouver seeing the Peace Arch. The inscription.. something like "to the children of a common mother, let these gates never be closed". Amen to that.
I'm a Czech fan of the Habs fan but this run was just beautiful Edmonton, I cried so much when the Oilers lost! You guys will always be my second team.
I am a Bruins fan. I have the constant misfortune of putting up with Canadiens fans who hate America. The same fans give all Canadians a bad name, even though it is not the case. The fact that the Oilers fans were singing the American National Anthem means a lot. Not only are they great hockey fans, but they also understand that America and Canada are brothers. Rivalry is great but hatred is stupid. Edmonton is a great city with great people.
@mad12b Im a Canadiens fan from new york and when i go to all the big games against the islanders or the rangers i always see the canadien fans singing our anthem unless they are french and dont understand the language.
@mad12b same goes for Boston, you cheered on the canadian anthem after yours got booed. vancouver is my 2nd favorite team but in the finals I didn't know who to cheer for, my 2nd favorite team or a city with such classy fans.
It's stupid that the Mounties salute 'The Star-Spangled Banner'; the whole purpose of the creation of the RCMP in the first place was TO PROTECT THE CANADIAN CONFEDERATION FROM U.S. INCURSIONS ON OUR SOIL!!!
Because Calgary owns Edmonton! (Partly literally; most of the big companies in Alberta are headquartered in Calgary. Look at Calgary's skyline, then look at Edmonton's: big difference eh!)
I XD'd at the annotation when it showed chris Pronger.
Also lol Joey Moss. He's awesome. I remember when I worked at Rexall Place, Joey was talking to me and I couldn't understand a word he was saying. He was getting frustrated with me. lol

Congrats to our neighbours (note the spelling....) to the north on winning the gold medal in women's hockey.
makes me so proud to be from edmonton, i love how loud we not only sung the canadian anthem but the american's star spangled banner as well, way more class then when the montreal canadien fans boo'ed it
@EvalowaCubsFan: Yes We had to have the Star Spangled Banner. Even though I like "O Canada" sung in English and French better then our "Star Spangled Banner" Ours still isn't bad, it's just that Canada's is better. I admit it.
You do realise that the lyrics to the anthem were written by a man watching your Yankee fort being bombarded by our ships.
Your anthem is gayer than ours for that reason - plus you stole the tune. And our anthem acknowledges Christ, so it is holier. Haha, USA is collapsing.
If it makes you comfortable... but nonetheless the reality is different from the delusion of grandeur that the U.S. Government promotes itself to be. The USA is massively in debt, under invasion from Mexicans, under an epidemic of African-American births, under attack by Islamicists, is spending too much and borrowing more and more... oh, and your industry is mostly sold out to the Chicoms.
Mark my words, the USA will collapse. Dmitry Orlov has proven it.
I am Canadian. Although I hate what it represents, musically I think 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is not too bad. Of course, it was taken from a British tune, and a poem was put to the lyrics, but still...
@TonoFonseca The Star-spangled Banner represents a small, upstart nation defending its rights from the greatest, most depraved empire in the history of mankind. What is there to hate?
This is awesome. You just dont see anything like is in other sports (except for soccer). As an American, its nice to see the Canadians sing our anthem as well. I love Canada--I think its a great country full of classy people...with the exception of some of the people that live in Montreal....

Fourth stanza of The Star-spangled Banner:
Oh, thus be it ever, when free men shall stand, between their loved homes and the war's desolation;
Blessed with victory and peace may the heaven-rescued land, PRAISE THE POWER THAT HATH MADE AND PRESERVED IT A NATION.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, and this be our motto: IN GOD IS OUR TRUST!
And the Star-spangled Banner in triumph shall waive, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
