  • Whithout the music makes it kinda creepy when playing. Kids these days too spoiled.. they want sound, 3D-graphs, the whole sjabang! :D

  • I had no idea Garret from the thief series played apocalyptic games. No really,, you sound just like him. Great voice. Gonna enjoy this.

  • Nobody cares what you named your characters.

  • I love your descriptions..

  • Woah, Lilly? Lilly is a ranger and would use a M16 or similar firearm? Remember in New Vegas? When you get to the mutant town, and you meet the super mutant called Lilly... Who, uses a M4A1 with ease.

  • @WebbStudiosBackUp sadly the VA for lily just passed away a few days ago ):

  • I am really impressed with your dedication. This series is a true delight for a Fallout fan.

YouTube definitely needs more people like you (even though your name is not Lilly).

    Keep up the good work!

  • @mikfox74 Wow, thanks, man!

  • What is the music?

  • @sarphati7 It's music from the first Fallout game. Which track, I honestly can't say, but I give credit to all the music by title in the credit sequence at the end, in the very last video.

  • You should do audiobooks with the voice you have...

  • @flyingace1234 Thanks. I wish I could! ;)

  • I believe floppies had 128k, nowhere near 1MB ;)

  • @ClassicsRemade Yeah, I can't really remember, but 5.25 inch floppies did go past 1 MB before they were obsolete! :)

  • War.....War never changes....

  • You are a very good narrator

  • @NiNjASH4RK Thanks, NiNjASH4RK.

  • Your voice is soo awesome Good job!

  • @VASYlisk61 Thanks, VASYlisk'!

  • I'm loving this, you're awesome!

  • @MoralidadMty I'm glad you're enjoying it, MoralidadMty!

  • it sounds like your reading out of a book

  • @katzmeow78 Yeah, this series is about 30 hours of game footage edited down to only four! I then added commentary and narration afterwards.

  • I am incredibly jealous of anyone who plays in any table top game your involved in!! :(

  • @theshadowcult Nah... I'm a total introvert, and I clam up at the table. :P Thanks, though. :)

  • @mynameisnotlilly the world is a little more sad for it :(

  • dude your awesome to go into such detail with ur character....iv always been used to backgrounds given already in RPGs that i never bothered with really thinking of roleplaying....i now realize that i just play games and never really get to know and understand a character. i just play how i feel in rl and make choices based on that.....watching ur videos really make me want to learn how RPing is really done lol

  • @VictorVonFox Thanks, Victor. I didn't think I went into *that* much detail, as I try to stay away from long expositions and stuff, unless you're talking about Lilly--I've been developing that character for over a year now. :P But yeah, you should just do whatever's the most fun for you, at that moment, ya' know? If that's roleplay, go for it. If it's just horsing around, you should do that too! ;)

  • 0:35 I know floppy disc :P I lived in that age :) was pretty good at DOS also.

  • @RiseofBane Heh. It's funny, because you can even find videos on YouTube that showcase that distinctive floppy drive sound. Some even make music out of the audio samples! :P

  • @mynameisnotlilly and I just watched my good memory, Cosmo's Comic Adventure :)

  • Hello. I was searching for "Postapocalyptic games" and came across the title Wasteland. I remembered being told how it was the predecessor to the Fallout-series and that it was rather epic. I found myself intrigued and decided to search for gameplay footage. First hit was bad. It had a heavy metal soundtrack. My search continued. My next hit - This video emerged. I clicked 'play' and was greeted by the most soothing voice in YouTube-history. This was the story about how I subbed to your channel.

  • @socdk Hej! Heh... that's kind of you to say, socdk. :) And thanks, I appreciate the support. To be honest, though, this isn't the type of series I typically make. It was more of an experiment. I usually record commentary "live" while recording, while this is summarized with commentary added in post-production, although I may try projects similar to this in the future. Either way, thanks for the interest!

  • Lol nice radio voice there. Now that you've done this, maybe I won't have to bother to go back and finish my LP. It's always a task to do a game as old as this.

  • @MikeBra99 Mike! Thanks, man. You're the only guy with a *real* playthrough of this game on YouTube, that I know of--this is heavily edited. I think it was over 30 hours of gameplay, condensed to about 4 hours. :P It leaves out all that painful combat, giving the impression that one won't get frustrated playing this gem. ;)

  • Tord, brian fargo just got the rights for the wasteland franchise from EA he was the creator of wasteland and fallout.Intresting

  • @254jacksonpro What do you mean, Jackson? That the rights changed hands *very* recently, this year?

  • @mynameisnotlilly He got the rights last year, but hes been deving Hunted:demons forge its something to look out for he said "I want to bring back the franchise that inspired fallout, stay tuned"

  • @IdaGno Well, don't forget things like the Colorodo River--and it turns out to be a useful skill, believe it or not! :) "Old Cape Cod"? Heh... that's a little *too* new, for the popular radio tunes I included. ;) Thanks.

  • Awesome! I love how you created backstory for all of the characters. ^_^

  • @kad3t Thanks, kad3t--they're not the deepest backstories, but hopefully enough to breath a little life into the story. :)

  • If this is the spiritual predecessor to fallout are the rangers in Fallout: New Vegas meant to be the rangers from wasteland?

  • @FaceyFaceFaceTV I don't know, Lyndon--it could be! I haven't played anything but the first Fallout so far (and I need to keep spoilers down for the others so I can do them "blind"), but I wouldn't be surprised if there were other references in the other games. :)

  • @mynameisnotlilly Heh, I don't know if you noticed but..,Tycho, the NPC you can recruit in Junk Town make VERY heavy nods to this game. Also, not to spoil New Vegas but...Rangers are a big part of that game

  • @FaceyFaceFaceTV It's been confirmed that Wasteland and Fallout take place in entirely different timelines. I believe the desert rangers that were referenced in 1 and Vegas were intended to pay homage to Wasteland, however.

  • I know what a floppy disk is.. horray!

  • Excellent start. I'm looking forward to this one.

(I'm near the end of your Fallout videos; in the upper 90's)

In Junktown the NPC Tycho, when questioned later, can tell you that his grandfather was a desert ranger.

  • @GizmoJunk Thanks, GizmoJunk--and thanks for your interest in the Fallout series as well! This, obviously, is a different format--the first time I'm trying something like it, so... please just keep that in mind if you continue to watch. :)

And I heard about the Wasteland backstory with Tycho--that's definitely interesting! I guess that's probably one of the only concrete references to this game in the series.

  • @mynameisnotlilly

He mentions another small reference, but that might be a spoiler for you at this point (I don't know).

  • This is terrific you really bring the game alive with your narration.

  • @Darziak Thanks, Darziak. It's funny you put it that way, because that's what I was hoping to do: breath some life into the game. :)

  • @EnergizerTurkey Wow, 'Turkey, that's some compliment, and I thank you for it--but you're crazy to say it! :P

  • amazing storytelling!! terrific!!!

i'm looking forward to the next chapter!

  • @jukimv1986 Thanks, jukimv! I keep repeating myself, but I feel like I need to warn anyone who seems to appreciate the little bit of writing I tried to do in the beginning: as the true size of this project revealed itself, I realized I wasn't able to spend as much time on later parts--hopefully the overall story arc remains intact through to the very end, but the details fall a little short later on. Sorry in advance! :)

  • Wow Tord... just wow...

  • @RetroLPer Thanks, Ben, assuming that's a positive "wow." ;) The thumbnail for this video shows the screen I was talking about that has the colors I chose for the pictures in the intro': the one that shows the title "WASTELAND" itself.

  • Wow. You sound like you know what you're doing.

  • @fre2e2 Thanks, Cal--but this is recorded after I played the game. So although the playthrough follows a process of discovery (naturally), the commentary won't always reflect that. 20/20 hindsight and all that. ;)

  • nope i have only had a plastic one though i've seen the bigger ones. i got some really old cd's but thats just about all i have old stuff wise

  • Once again Tord, you are a born narrator.

The interface somewhat reminds me of the old gold box D and D games.

You gona do a less than 15 min vid for this one, too?

  • @RealArcalian Thanks, Arcalian. The parts are going to be cut according to content--locale, mostly--so some might be as short as 5 minutes, some as long as 35 minutes!

  • @mynameisnotlilly No I mean, are you gonna do a 15 min summary vid at the end

  • @RealArcalian Oh, no. Not for these side series. The game's actually *already* summarized: it was over thirty hours of gameplay knocked down to about four! :P

  • LAB here: Love the jazz you include in your video's! What song was used around 5 minutes?

  • @LordsOfTheGreenLeaf Ha ha! I'm glad you like that one, Lord Assorted Bits--I *abuse* it ;) throughout the series, as a sort of theme. I plan to credit all the music properly in the last video, but that one is "Guess Who" by Billie Holiday from 1936, backed by Teddy Wilson & His Orchestra.

  • @mynameisnotlilly Heh, I have a collection of 10 CD's with Billy Holiday songs (including some recordings with Tony Wilson & His Orchestra), but that song isn't inbetween them (on over 200 tracks!) Didn't spot her version of "Gloomy Sunday" either unfortunately. (Nice version of the so-called "Hungarian suicide-song", of which the composer did kill himself.)

Music & games: keep them coming! <3

    LAB

  • @LordsOfTheGreenLeaf I don't know how many 10 CD sets there are, but that's actually where mine came from! :D "Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia (1933-1944)," disc one.

  • @SapphireWarden Wow, I'm surprised to be hearing so many people who remember the game--that's nice, and a testament to it's quality, I guess, being that it's not forgotten. Thanks, I appreciate the encouragement, Helen. :)

  • Wow, this is good stuff. It seem's you have more knowledge on this game than Fallout 1, is this blind as well?

  • @HappyJ28 Thanks, Jack. The format of this series is totally new for me: a summary narrative, so even though I went into it blind, the commentary has the benefit of retrospection; and admittedly, there were a few spots I had help with--but since I was going to cut most of the gameplay out anyway, I didn't think that was an issue, especially since my point was to showcase the setting and characters for fans of the Fallout franchise, not show a playthrough--hopefully that makes sense! :)

  • Feels like Old Time Radio all over again <3

  • @DMorlack Cool, Dan, I'm glad you seem pleased. :) There are paragraphs that have to be read from the game manual (not included in the game itself), so there will be quite a few segments that are strictly audial--although I threw up text during those segments in case people wanted to read it for themselves anyway. ;)

  • Grandpa Tord with a picture book! It all makes sense now...

  • @GrimithR :P

  • @GrimithR Heh... violent stories set in the post-apocalypse with what grandpa would call "sexual deviants"... it would have to be illustrated by Gerald Scarfe! ;)

  • Holy crap, this´s a game that I have wanted to see for some time now. And I really love the way you´re going to play it and tell us about it. Thanks. I´m looking for to see the rest of the parts to Wasteland!

    Great work!

  • @xSpiritbane I'm glad to hear it, Spiritbane--I hope you're not too disappointed by the end! ;) The tutorial-style pauses were more about pointing out what I thought were the unique aspects of the game than to show people how to actually play--after the first few parts, they become less frequent. Thanks!

  • A fascinating first look into Lady Black's exploits within the world of Wasteland. I was amused how your video description notes Lilly Black as a 'corrupt' Desert Ranger.

I'm curious, if you don't mind my asking, did you design the other party members of Lilly's squad?

Intriguing times most certainly lay ahead. Thanks in advance, for what will undoubtedly be another exciting journey.

  • @NS13Guardian Yeah, "corrupt" just seemed to be the appropriate word--this is the first time she's been part of a "rank and file" organization, tasked with protection, almost like a police officer! ;)

The characters are all my own creation, with the few details I could conjure up; but the names... I actually took directly from the cast of a film, partly in tribute to the absurd, but also just because I didn't want to over-think the names. I'm surprised nobody's made the connection yet! :D

  • Wow, that intro screen is kinda disappointing. The Commodore 64 version had a fully animated opening showing satelites being blown up and the bombs dropping.

  • @ScreamingDoom Ah, but it's not disappointing at all! The DOS version fully allows you to engage your imagination and concoct all of the events yourself rather than rely on animations to do it for you. It's a mental exercise leading to PROFIT!

  • @GrimithR I dare you to LP Moonmist from Infocom, then! Playing the Yellow scenario!

Extra points for trying to go to the bathroom in the middle of dinner!

  • @ScreamingDoom Wow, really? You're probably going to be even more disappointed with the ending (game graphics), then! That's interesting though... I wonder how many other differences there are between the versions.

  • @mynameisnotlilly I never finished (or even got very far) in the C64 version, so I can't compare the ending sequence. As for other differences... the C64 version couldn't fit all the game text on the disk, so there are large amounts of plot info and such in a seperate game book. At various points in the game, you were told to read Section XX on page XX for relevant information. Not sure if the DOS version has that.

The C64 version was also based on the Bard's Tale engine.

  • @ScreamingDoom The DOS version refers to paragraphs as well, so they'll be included. I made slight edits for perspective or to remove the rare instance where the game would put words down the protagonist's throat ;) but otherwise, they'll be subtitled as well.

  • I KNOW WHAT A FLOPPY DISK IS :D

  • @fattyacid6 Fair enough, Matt--but I bet ya', you don't have old school projects sitting around on 5 1/4 floppy like I do! ;)

  • This sounds awesome so far, you've got my full interest. I hope to see the Wasteland Charlie's Angels thrive in the the post apcolyptic world.

  • @BloodReaperZ Cool, BloodReaperZ! If I at least got you to imagine what they look like in your mind's eye, then I'm very happy! :D Heh... Lilly's Angels. ;)

  • @mynameisnotlilly That should totally be the team name xD

  • Fantastic intro to a supposedly underdog game, I'd say. I don't know where you dug it up, but I must say I love your cinematic commentary. Great piece of work. Certainly some LPers will follow this pre-composed narration manner. I like it. This made the into to the game so acessible to todays players.

  • @Nagidal146 Thank you, Nagidal. I took time to write more in the beginning, unfortunately, the project turned out to be too large (unexpectedly), so the later parts didn't get as much attention as the first few--but I learned a great deal if I ever try something like it again! :)

  • This is brilliant :)

  • @veriax Wow, thanks Veriax--I appreciate that! =) Heh... is it because I got away with only posting two screens in almost nine minutes of video? :P

  • Soyeah, I'd definitely enjoy doing LP's more if people actually watched my videos. -.-

    But, great video Tord. <3

  • @KenzooHD Hopefully you're doing them for yourself first, James; otherwise, I know what you mean--I had almost a hundred videos up before I even had four subscribers--you just can't do it for any other reason than your own enjoyment, in my opinion. :) And thanks!

  • LC here, Tord, great start so far :-) Can't wait to see more of the world (unlike our would-be major general right ;-))

  • @LordsOfTheGreenLeaf Thanks, Lord Cucumber. :) Cool--parts are pretty much divided by location, so each one will show a new location (as distinct as those locales can be for a 1 MB game! :P).

  • Wow, this is pretty cool. It's like the (admittedly undetailed) game is just an outline for a full story.

  • @ChristesII Glad you think so, Chris. Actually, the unclear orders from Ranger Center is pretty cool--even when the game "ends," it's like a sandbox, you can just keep going and playing, exploring other areas, etc.

  • how are your videos not more popular? its a crime!

  • @chilly22 Nah, chilly. :) These are popular enough for me--I still get anxiety as it is uploading stuff! :P

  • 1 Meg?! That'd be a HUGE 5 1/4 " floppy. 360K was normal.

  • @frac Hey, Al... Ha ha! Not even with High Density? :D

  • Oh Lordy Tordy, your narration is terrific Tordy :)

  • @MrSentia Thanks, Jacob. :) Billie the Brawler? Heh... Billie clubs? ;)

  • @8:13-8:59 Lilly..."black"......Q_Q

  • @6:25 Billie the Brawler O.o

  • You sure know how to bring characters to life!

This LP is reminding me of a mix between an audio-novel and a visual-novel, and I mean that in the best possible way. Mostly static images used sparingly to convey the general atmosphere and situation, with the majority of things explained in great detail through voice. It's a great mix!

  • @scarycrayons Thanks, 'crayons--I hope so, at least a little bit! I was worried that anyone watching wasn't necessarily going to see them as *I* saw them, or at least in as much detail. The problem with later parts is that I didn't have as much time to mold the in-game text into unique narration, but I'm glad you like it so far--even though it's only been two screens! :P

  • Great narration, Tord! You should have that talented person who drew the pictures of Lilly in your status video to make more for this series, to complement your skills when the screen goes black. :)

  • @evertongalning Lilly Black #_+

  • @MrSentia lol

  • @evertongalning Thanks, Mikael. That talented person you're referring to is slaxor: he's actually drawn two portraits of Lilly from the Fallout series. :)

  • Tord, you would be an excellent Dungeon Master. :D

  • @JelLoSnArK Oh man. I'm getting nerdgasms just thinking of that.

  • @JelLoSnArK I don't know about that, Jello'! ;) I appreciate the sentiment, thanks, but I'm too... meticulous, to the annoyance of others. :P

  • Interesting! I didn't think I would like such an old game, but your narration sure makes it much more fun and.. wait.. mutant cactus? ;)

  • @ReclusiarchLP I'm glad to hear your interest is piqued so far, David--thanks. :) Heh... I told it was going to be a bit wacky--but that's the spirit of the game, as you'll see if you continue to watch!

  • Hopefully you won't be plastered with "HOW DO I GET THIS GAME?" comments. ;)

  • @slaxor :D

  • @slaxor That's actually why I mentioned it was abandonware--in fact, I think it's the first hit if you Google "wasteland abandonware"! :P By the way, did you see you received a compliment from evertongalning in the comments here, concerning your artist talents? :)

  • @mynameisnotlilly I know. That's why I'm hoping you won't get shafted. Some people just don't know what Google can do. :P

I was actually considering doing a party/group picture. You describing the group really got my imagination going. We'll see what happens.

  • zomg, sorry, read Tord for Torg. I've been reading too much sluggyfreelance. mb.

    O.o

  • Incredible. Only Torg could do this right. This LP is going to Rock our rocks off.

*getting my german bundersloopen-germockeren* sock-suspenders on as we speak!!

  • @amiserable Wow, Amis'--thanks. Heh... Torg sounds likes a wrestler--like Tor Johnson, from "Plan 9 from Outer Space"! :P

  • Aah, I'm loving it already! This is a very interesting approach, and I think it's perfect for you and the game, since you do have the perfect narrating voice, which fills the 'blank spots' of the game perfectly, i.e. missing sounds, crude process and such. I'm looking forward to the rest of it!

  • @JohnZoidberg1417 That's good, Tom--thanks. :) I actually added not only music (as we hear here), but some ambient tracks *and* a rare sound effect here and there just to punctuate important events--but hopefully it's not too obtrusive.

  • I cant believe you made a game from 86 so interesting!

I played a lot of games, and I’m yet to se a pro. narration half as good as this.

    Fantastic!

  • @MrBORKOMAN Don't say that yet, Mr. Borkoman--we haven't even gotten to gameplay yet! ;) Thanks, though. And just to be clear, it wasn't actually released until 1988.
