Would love to be able to test in on the roads in Chicago under ALL the weather conditions, since they change almost every 15 minutes or though it seems. Also would be fun to see the reaction of friends when the car would start driving itself.
Haven't the able-bodied ever considered cycling in general and using the car mainly for getting groceries? People are already far too lazy and fat. Allow those who walk with a cane or crutches to use the car, because they need it more than you do. Leave it to Americans to ruin a good system. What was wrong with placing your laptop, charger and papers in a backpack and walking to the nearest bus stop or tram, especially in LA?
Like I'm all for computers driving but when its driving like that I would be scared shitless like I have seen these cars drive sensibly but even if a human was driving that like that near walls I would be pretty scared. I supose it is driving sensibly because its a computer but just f*** that car is a good driver.
Search for "A Musical Introduction to Self Driving Cars" - A presentation I've made after I've realized that a lot of people are afraid of this technology. Please help me bring it to them so that people know the truth about Self Driving Cars
@npfg72 I'm guessing the car would only drive fast enough to allow proper response time. This is a test track and it would not drive this aggressively in traffic. But remember that its response time is way above human and the LIDAR can see much more than the human eye can, 360 degrees all way around, so chances are it would be much safer for you to step out in front of the car on this track when the car is driving itself, than if a human were driving.
i wouldnt want a computer to drive for me, i'm in control of my own life or death lol. As good as this is, nothing beats the feeling of steering my own car.
Is it's reaction time better than a humans is there is something obstructing the driving lane? Does it know if it can switch lanes? What if something falls off the truck in front of me on a highway and there is a patch of ice or snow? What about deer?
@chocobofarmer2021 It's funny you're asking: the majority of human drivers seem unable to properly handle any of the situations you're mentioning, behind a steering wheel!
So, you know, sticking to the stone age is an option you're free to choose. I bet you'd have asked "Does it feed on its own? What happens when it doesn't want to steer? What if it gets scared by something? It looks scary" when some guy proposed to stop walking and ride horses.
@Branlutteur I'll be one of the first in line for sure. I was curious if it has been engineered for winter conditions yet. Can it see the road if it is covered in snow? It will also need to be able to detect friction to adjust speed accordingly. It will need to be able to understand drifts and piles of slush so it doesn't spin out of control. I don't see that it is engineered for winter yet. Does it just shut off if it can't see the road?
@chocobofarmer2021 I can't PR for Google and have no idea whether they have worked these issues out or not. Yet.
What I know for a fact is that they obviously won't release it until it's entirely ready to face any sort of road conditions; and I'm pretty sure the whole system is meant to detect whether it actually has the ability or not to take that sort of driving. I'd bet if it detected it couldn't, it would hand back the steering wheel or stop itself.
@chocobofarmer2021 In fact, I bet you they'll release it as a driving assistance feature that never drives on its own nor takes over your driving, unless it's to brake when you're about to hit something (falling asleep, picking up stuff that fell down, not paying attention...).
And while it serves as an assistant for years and years, they test it for self-drive. When people become confident enough, they'll beg for the car to drive itself.
@Branlutteur I hope it's good when they release it. Can't wait to use it on the highway and in busy city areas. I would trust it on dry roads but get nervous in a northern winter when the roads get bad until they show it works in winter conditions.
@chocobofarmer2021 Traction control is pretty much standard these days, so any car with a system like this would know the condition of the road better than you possibly can. But, yes, bring on the winter demos. I want to see it. :-)
@joecatty Potaytoes Potahtoes. Binary indicates that it's either 1 or 0, which is perfectly fine to say. Boolean is a binary type in most programming languages, which is probably why you thought he should say that.
@AgrivatedKillah I don't think that it is funny. Out of curiosity i just repeated a common internet meme to see how many likes would it get in a video like this.
There's something things that shouldn't be done electronically; automatic driving (self-driving) and taking pictures of your checks and sending them through the phone.
I want to see it doing platooning, 1 google car in the lead doing what it normally does, 3 or 4 google cars tailgating really close together, as close as possible, if the tires are good then their instant reaction times should allow just a few inches between them.
.....was looking forward to some kind of fail, even on the drivers side at the end. would've been funny if he hit something or the cone at the end. o well.. pretty snazzy. (almost as snazzy as uttering he phrase "pretty snazzy") :D
