I have never tried moose, im curious as to how gamey it is, and how the meat stacks up against venison? Input from ANYONE would be great! Thanks for the video!!!!!
@NragedXX IMHO moose and elk are generally not to gamey, more often than not people don't cool them properly or they make other mistakes that result in a strong taste. That isn't always the case but it is often true.
So far every Caribou that I have ever cut has had a strong gamey smell and flavour to it regardless of it's after hunt handling.
nice! was hoping you would take a swing at some bone with the trail master tho, they do cut flesh pretty good, i know because i had my recon scout bounce off a log in a freak accident and slice the top of my hand open!
Really good video. Something to consider though, a tough use knife like these will probably not be hair splitting sharp by the time you need to butcher an animal in a survival situation. I find it's a good idea to practice using a dull knife.... If you are used to using a sharp knife 24/7, it can be dangerous if you are forced to use a dull knife. Using a dull knife definitely takes extra precautions and techniques to not hurt yourself. Sometimes you just will not have an ability to sharpen.
love watching you at your craft brother!!! def takes some skill. i've never done more that a deer but i would love to learn more about this!!! great job!!!
@ryanjd2006 Thanks Ryan. I may do some how to vids when things get a little slower at the shop but in the mean time you should check out TheHuntingLife channel, he does a great demo using only his boning knife to cut up a deer.
I was surprised too. I the video you look lots more agile with the smaller knife and more like a pro, but as you say the demo was for a survival situation and the did the job without missing much meat, so they both would work fine.
SWIBO! thats crzy man youre a butcher! I am too!!!!!! haha i realized how much i enjoyed processing animals when i would help my grandad out on his farm so when a spot opened up in my grocery store i jumped at the chance! thats crazy I wonder if alot of bushcrafters are butchers.
@boomer00000 Hey a fellow meat head! I haven't heard of any other bushcraft buthchers but it's a good job choice for anybody that likes living away from big cities. I can hardly get in my cooler right now because of all the moose!
you should do a full video on how to butcher a whole animal.. were the steak, loan, roast ect comes from. I go elk hunting every year.. have sense I was about 5.. but me and my family never butchered are kills. Id like to. I usually cut out the back straps sense the butcher dont give them to us. But other then that, I dont have a clue on how to cut an animal up. Thanks for another great video!
Useful video, as others have said, your a professional and could probably do a decent job with any knife. I'm disappointed the mora neck knife didn't get a run.
@dmgm1970 I thought about using the mora because you made a comment about it on my last vid, sorry I didn't reply to that BTW. I don't like a "bushcraft style" mora or any scandi grind knife for serious butcher work, I find that the edge is too fine and the blade of the clipper is too short. I will try to address this and explain my reasons in a future video.
I think the fact that you know what you are doing with the knife has more to do with it than the knife itself. You could give someone who doesn't have any experience the perfect knife for the job,and they would not get the results that someone with experience would, with a not so perfect knife. If that makes sense. Good vid!
He is comparing the Trailmaster and the SRK to his normal butchering knives.....
Not so much trying them as knives should be used.
You could give a novice both the survival knife and the meat knives and they could still make a mess of everything.
Only an expert can 'feel' and tell the difference between the various tools on a specific job....and your right...it does help if you know what your doing.
Wow! That is some nice meat there. I used to do that back in Europe with pigs. By the end of each year, with first frost, we used to kill a pig about 150 kilos, cut it down and hang it under the roof to smoke it. The best part was a big plats of bacon with lots of meat on it, so when you cut it that looked like a American Flag lots of stripes of red white red white.... I can buy that here in Ontario but the best was prepared by my self.
Another great video! Watched all of them and look forward to more! Be safe out there buddy! Thanks for helping me loose myself for a few minutes in your outdoor adventures too! Been too long since I've been out in the "bush".
FINALLY a demonstration of use...

By the way, keep in mind the SRK is also meant to be a military knife, so it's gona be able to cut meat (grim thought but true)
