Definitely should have kept Donna hearing the TARDIS leave but I believe ending it as they did with the Doctor staring sadly ahead in the TARDIS was more effective - it reminds us that he's gone through a painful loss before only this time there's no Donna to suddenly appear to help him recover and once again find some enjoyment in life!!
We can thank Benjamin Cook of DW magazine for suggesting to Russell to change it from this ending to the real one as it just didn't work after all the Doctor was on his own again,
@lmullen93 Originally, the Cybermen were supposed to be falling through time and just accidentally ended up in the TARDIS, as the Doctor turned to face them, they disappeared but he was able to follow them to Earth but as usual, the TARDIS turned up a little later than planned, and the Cybermen already had made a small base for themselves in the sewers of London.
Though the Donna bit could've stayed,I can see why they cut out these parts out. The Cybermen showing up at the end of the episode would've felt too awkward & ruined the emotion after such a sad scene, just like Donna showing up right after The Doctor had said goodbye to Rose in Doomsday. As for the Donna part,as nice a scene as it is,It wouldn't have made sense for Donna to look back at the sound of the TARDIS. It would've meant she was remembering (I mean, who could forget that sound?)
@Drwhofanindatardis It's what was originally planned to happen at the end of Journey's End. The scenes with Donna hearing the Tardis and the Cybermen appearing were cut, but dWhoFan9 has edited them back in for this video.
@E9ODOC7890 dont forget...the reason he thought hed die,is because of a mistranslation of what the ood told him. Also the fact he already regenerated before hand to save rose during the Missing Planets season. Though apparently that one didnt count towards his total lifespan since he stopped early.
@E9ODOC7890 what I ment by that was it would have bluffed audiences further that David Morrissey was indeed the new Doctor, it would have speculated The Doctor was caught by Cybermen the night that which lead to the 11th Doctor.
Presumably there was a reason for the Doctor to go Cyber-hunting that Christmas, until someone in BBC Wales remembered how hard it is to get into the TARDIS uninvited.

I wish for the time when we don't know that an important enemy is returning, like they did with Earthshock! :D That would be awesome.

The sound of the klaxxon going off at the end is from 2001: Space Odyssey; where Dave Bowman blows the explosive bolts of his space pod hatch.

So how were the cybermen to have gotten on board?

why would of the cybermen been in the tardis anyway
MLKingBoyCelts4Life 11 months ago
The fact that the Doctor is suddenly bone-dry when he's in the control room probably contributed to this scene getting cut.

The reason they didn't put this in is because rtd said the show was sad enough to then put a cliff hanger at the end
steking1237 1 year ago
I think some small way donna knew what was going on the look on her face said it all
