This is called elephant toothpaste. It uses Hydrogen peroxide (30% or more) and Potassium or sodium iodide as the oxidizer. It produces a lot of heat and looks really cool. If you try regular pharmacy hydrogen peroxide the results aren't anywhere near spectacular, even assuming you can get potassium iodide.

Fill the bottle 3/4 way up with Peroxide, that is why a small bottle works best. 3.) add some dish soap. Do not make it foam, just enough to tint the peroxide with soap color. 4.) Add 3 tblspn. of warm water to every 1 tblspn. of yeast. 5.) add the mixed yeast to the peroxide solution Outside.

The effect is not the same, but you get the same general Idea.

Potassium iodide and hydrogen peroxide are both relatively harmless. Potassium iodide is a very harmless salt and peroxide is a mild irratant at lower concentrations, it can cause burns at higher concentrations. This reaction is a great demonstration of a catylist KI catalyses the breakdown of H2O2 to H20 + 1/2 O2. The O2 gas generated is caught by the washing up liquid. Get the most concentrated H2O2 for best effect. It's very safe as long the children don't handle the peoxide.

Procedure: Mix a good bit of wash up liquid into 100ml of conc. H2O2 in a tall vessle. then pour in a gram of KI dossolved in a small amount of water and watch the magic happen!
