I'm sorry to have to tell you people this, but Soviet Early Warning systems were full of redundancies, and unless multiple systems were alerting officials of a missile launch by U.S. and/or NATO forces, they would not launch a retaliatory nuclear strike based solely on the data provided by Petrov's solitary system. Perov therefore a). had a duty to report his data to his superiors and b). was rightfully disciplined for his failure to carry out his duty. Let's not overestimate his importance.
@geoffck6969 To reinforce my point, "On the same day that Petrov was honored at the United Nations in New York City, the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations issued a press release contending that a single individual would be incapable of starting or preventing a nuclear war, stating in part: (cont'd)
@geoffck6969 "Under no circumstances a decision to use nuclear weapons could be made or even considered in the Soviet Union (Russia) or in the United States on the basis of data from a single source or a system. For this to happen, a confirmation is necessary from several systems: ground-based radars, early warning satellites, intelligence reports, etc."[3] Source: Wikipedia.
~it was flashes from the Gama Ray Bursts from a Feeding Pulsar in the Crab Nebula that fooled you nuke detector
+why would someone say it was shadow flashes from the sun that almost had the Soviet Union tricked into mistaking the Yankee False Flag Games when it was Gamma Ray Burst; does the Central Scrutinizer not want the masses to think about the Feeding Magnistar Flash that struck 0ff Fukushima in March
=I'll dig the factual version up; you might annotate a correction
Incredable... It's as if so many of us were psionically aware that we were within inches of going to full Nuke-Out. I was 13 at the time, and I still can't beleive it! When you read about 1983, and how close we were to the Apocalypse, one wonders if perhaps this song was playing in the backround during the alerts while Stanislav Petrov told his boss at the Kremlin that they were chasing ghosts? Please listen to: It's a Mistake by Men At Work.
Spasibo, Stanislav Petrov. You deserve the Nobel! I'm so sorry that your right-decisoin-making got you in trouble. I owe you my life, as do a few billion people. Cheers, mate. You deserve better than what you've got. History will give you your due.
heh that siren wailing and lights seem to be designed in order to freak you out... lol if I was there and it all started I'd be like 'WTF??!!' for the first 5 seconds then I'd shit my pants
I wish I could tell Petrov "Thank you!", personally. He suffered humiliation but saved the world! I wouldn't have lived passed age five if it weren't for him! :)
