I think the fact that NIN's live band members change so frequently helps a lot with that. Members come and go all the time, so no one's ever around long enough to get stuck in the habitual rut of playing the song the same way all the time

Yeah, the synthesized part is only on this video. I found the same video of the same song at the same concert from the same DVD, and there isn't that synthesized bit. Look for it. It's got better quality, too.

Yeah, the synthesized part is the codec muddling up the bass and the voice. Notice how it only goes "synthesized" when the bass not plays in that part of the song.
