No gravel base, this is a good idea on any pier type foundation.

You're probably right, but this is a very heavy deck and our soil in the winter changes. Very little freezing, but what was as hard as a pool table in August becomes Oatmeal in January, It happened to a fuel tank we had, it almost flipped over.

why would you need a posthole digger for that? looks like the frost line is a foot deep!
