Such haunting music. One of my good friends was deeply into this music back in the day. I was peripherally interested. It sounds damn good to hear it all today. Glad I could hear it with better ears now. Simply wonderful.
You like the medieval feel, listen to Supper's Ready on Seconds Out, also by Genesis, though you must have already heard it if you're listening to Trespass. Until today, the only song I had heard off of Trespass was The Knife. I was always a huge fan of Genesis, but I had never heard much of Trespass, as my dad (from whom I get all this great music) does not own the album (I had heard The Knife on the Fourteen From Our Past album). Now, Trespass is my second favorite album, next to Seconds Out.
Sorry, but this is the first time I'm listening to the song, and from the moment Gabriel comes in, I start thinking: "Out of the darkness the voices are calling, riding the wings of a song...". Of course "Rising Force" is different, but could "White Mountain" have been a possible influence? Yngwie Malmsteen did admit to being a Genesis fan...
They were so young when they wrote this music and listen to how technical, melodic, and beautiful it is. I just wish the band kept this momentum instead of going into mainstream directions. Any one of them could have did that with a solo project but, Genesis should have been the artistic outlet it started out as. I know some may disagree with me but that is how I feel. I love their 1970-1977 period...
Their music up until the late 70's is amazing, but they have so many good albums that I can't feel disappointed. For some some reason Trespass is seen as an early album with potential but a couple shaky songs. I'd have to say it's in my top four with Selling England, Foxtrot, and the Lamb.
My top picks are The Lamb, Selling England, and Trick of a Tail. Their weakest album in my opinion during the 1970-1977 prog rock era was Nursery Chryme. Only 2 songs I care for on that album. Trespass is amazing though, very dark and ambient album. Foxtrot is also excellent but 1973-1975 they were really on fire musically.
Steep rose the ridge, ghostly peaks climbed the sky, Fang sped through jungles of ice. Hard on his tail, One-eye drew from the pack - An old hero conquered by none. Steep, far too steep, grew the pathway ahead, Descent was the only escape. A wolf never flees in the face of his foe, Fang knew the price he would pay - One-eye stood before him With the crown upon his head, Sceptre raised to deal the deadly blow.
Genesis were never givin the credit they deserve as a prog band and even more so since they changed to a more pop sound in the 80s(some argue late 70s) one of the most inovative bands of the 20th century.
White Mountain and Stagnation are both absolutely wonderful pieces of music. I remain totally in awe of their talents, achieved at such a young age. When I was this age I was messing around with old cars and getting drunk. And here I am, still enjoying their great music 38 years later.
I think Trespass is a very underrated album. Just look the difference between 'From Genesis to Revelation' and 'Trespass'! I think Trespass is a great album, far better than Nursery Cryme. White mountain rocks!
This album is great... but Nursery Cryme is perfect. Even the worst song on the album is amazing (which one is the worst I don't know). I can't think of any other album by any other band which is so completely lacking bad parts.
I'm a long time Genesis fan and am not surprised that you would comment that Nursery Crime is the best album. There's something about this album, perhaps its dreaminess, that really appeals to me and makes it the best one of all as far as I'm concerned.
I can understand this being a favorite album, certainly. I love how dreamy and wondrous it is too... I just don't think it's solid enough to be considered their "best" album.
Btw, if you like this style Genesis, definitely check out Anthony Phillips' solo stuff, if you haven't already.
Thanks athroughO. I appreciate your reply. I purchased Geese when it came out and the string of other releases Ant produced. He's one of my favorites of all time. Gosh, there's no words, really. Such passionate, sensitive music. Where has it all gone? Can you illuminate me on what else in the modern day?
Transcending experience remembered: I feel the sensation again from the moment i heard this in the room of my elder brother who just had bought this LP, some 35 yrs ago...

I would say that the composition of this album is dominated by Anthony Phillips.

Peter Gabriel brought the theatrical effect and the class
Phil Collins brought the rhythmic complexity
Tony Banks brought the virtuosity
Steve Hackett brought the progressive world...
Mike Rutherford brought the band
and Anthony Phillips brought the English charm and the pastoral universe that typifies Genesis
Indeed, he brought some of the most important thing that made Genesis look so unique

"Influence"? We're talking about stealing!

@amakrid Yes. I was being sarcastic. The vocal melody (at least the first couple of bars) is clearly lifted.

the beat doesn't get it. I like it better the way they did it in 76. You should here The Musical Box do this. Pretty damn close.

Thin hung the web like a trap in a cage,
The fox lay asleep in his lair.
Fang's frantic paws told the tale of his sin,
Far off the chase shrieked revenge.
Outcast he trespassed where no wolf may tread,
The last sacred haunt of the dead.
He learnt of a truth which only one wolf may know,
The sceptre and crown of a king.
Howling for blood, One-eye leads on the pack,
Plunging through forest and snowstorm.

Fang, son of Great Fang, the traitor we seek,
The laws of the brethren say this:
That only the king sees the crown of the gods,
And he, the usurper, must die.
Snarling he tore at the throat of his foe,
But Fang fought the hero in vain.
Dawn saw the white mountain tinted with red -
Never would the crown leave again.
One-eye his the crown and with laurels on his head
Returned amongst the tribe and dwelt in peace.

Peter sounds similar to Steve Winwood vocally.

@rmaxinmass Winwoods voice, in my opinion, is boring. Gabriel had/has that edge to it that makes it special

sounded so good without collins and hackett and still keep that great genesis sound...one of my favorite albums....
I like that medieval feel to the music
