But seriously, so audio jack in a Zune HD is substantially better, that's why Zune HDs cost a little more than an iPod touch. It's all in benchmarks. If you bed to differ, it's your opinion. But I'm going with the benchmarks.

Also, I prefer Zune's UI over Apple's; it just looks less cluttered, but that's all opinion too.

In fact, the output is a higher quality, so in higher volumes the track will sound less distorted. But the Digital out on an iPod is good.

@xXDP5150Xx Oh the Benchmarks of a device that's off the market. That's cool. I just think the zune is a hilarious flop. Everyone does. I don't care about portable sound quality. It's a magical device that lets me talk to people, take photos and video in 1080p, play them on my TV, edit them and put them on youtube oh and it fits in my pocket.

I don't need super high quality sound from an mp3. If I want that I'll go home and put on an LP.

There aren't many reviews for <$100 speakers, so thanks! I'm currently trying to decide between this 5.1 system and the 2.1 Altec Lansing Octane 7 you reviewed. I'll be using the speakers for music, movies, and games, and bass is very important to me. Which would you recommend?

Also, sheer volume/loudness isn't that important to me (I'm in a college dorm); I'm more concerned with quality and bass. Does the cone design of the Octane 7 muffle sounds at all?

The subwoofer on this system is mixed with the front left and right speakers, as in a 2.1 system, instead of being on its own LFE channel as called for in a 5.1 system. Avoid like the plague.

I picked this up and have encountered an immediate issue - there is no clear way to get 5.1 surround from anything other than a PC. These speakers only have 3 1/8"" inputs. You could get sound from an xbox 360 or ps3 going through all the speakers, but it would just be glorified 2.1 sound. Has anyone figured out a solution to this? I'm currently trying to figure it out.

Yes, but as far as I can tell, you cannot get true 5.1 surround from them from anything but a PC. You will only get glorified 2.1 out of your Xbox, so you might as well buy the $20 equivalent.

I have an xbox and I'd hook this up to it for gaming. What can I expect in the way of wires if I have the rear speakers about 12ish feet way from the source and 5 feet apart? And if there a way to wall mount the smaller speakers?

@beep41 Wires shouldn't be a problem. The speakers have screw holes on the back for a possible mounting solution, but they weren't made specifically for mounting in mind.
