I believe I owe my existence to the American entry to the Great War. My grandfather served in Flanders in the CEF and was wounded in 1918. If the Americans had not (finally) entered the war, he very easily could have been killed in the prolonged war. It would have lasted at least a year longer and probably more.

The British King was a cousin of the German Kaiser as well as the Russian Czar.

@MiNiSamster101 Nobody won the battle of the Somme. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment was nearly wiped out there on July 1, 1916. My great uncle in the 4th Bn CEF, died there Oct 8, 1916. There were a lot of Canadian and Aussie and NZ troops at El Alamein as well. Don't forget 'lend lease' and the tonnes of American munitions provided to the Brits in Africa. Also, didn't the Brits field some US built tanks there too (Grants of Shermans).

In the Great War, Germany, France and Great Britain were all nearly exhausted by 1918. The Germans gave up when faced with the resources brought to the fight by the United States.
The Americans tipped the balance but I guess that isn't winning like the Brits. Sir Alexander Haig was so close to winning after all.

General Haig had laid out British strategy as early as 1914: that the Allies had to fight a war of attrition; by 1918 the British blockade, and the debarring of chief articles as well as war materials, made the German position untenable. They didn't just 'give up' because a bunch of yanks suddenly turned up. The Germans had strategically lost the Western Front by 1916, hence the Hindenburg Line.

I believe I owe my existence to the American entry to the Great War. My grandfather served in Flanders in the CEF and was wounded in 1918. If the Americans had not (finally) entered the war, he very easily could have been killed in the prolonged war. It would have lasted at least a year longer and probably more.

They didn't exactly start the stupid war, the European system of secret alliances did that and unlike the second world war, there wasn't a clear ideological division into obvious 'good-guys' and 'bad-guys'. The British King was a cousin of the German Kaiser as well as the Russian Czar.
The British were led by fools.

I should have been more precise: There were only a few idiotic members of the Imperial General Staff. It is most unfortunate that they were the ones in charge. Haig, in particular was possibly the most incompetent of the lot. He is not alone, but he was responsible for the death of my grandmothers older brother. He signed off on the Battle of the Somme and has the blood of millions to his credit.

@jwaustinmunguy Possibly, possibly not. Look, the Americans grossly overplay their military importance in the Great War - their contribution was primarily affirming flagging moral, especially on the French side, and especially after the exit of the Russians.
The French and British had largely, strategically, won the Western Front by 1916. The Germans shifted to a defensive after Verdun & Somme and switched focus on the Eastern Front.

In Dec 1944 and Jan 1, 1945 the Germans attacked ferociously, The Yanks made up their losses from on-hand spares but the Germans no replacements.
The new tactics were spectacular in the hands of the right commanders like Currie of the C.E.F.

@MiNiSamster101 Nobody won the battle of the Somme. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment was nearly wiped out there on July 1, 1916. My great uncle in the 4th Bn CEF, died there Oct 8, 1916. There were a lot of Canadian and Aussie and NZ troops at El Alamein as well. Don't forget 'lend lease' and the tonnes of American munitions provided to the Brits in Africa. Also, didn't the Brits field some US built tanks there too (Grants of Shermans).

After 1916 the initiative shifted to the Allies where they began to advance; the American contribution was minimal; insofar as the Americas are concerned, the Canadians [British Empire] were far more important.

Who supplied aircraft and munitions to the Red Army who were pressing the Germans so hard that Hitler diverted Rommel's fuel to the Eastern Front?
Monty would have eventually have beaten Rommel in North Africa but the cost would have been much greater if Rommel had had the resources to actually engage the 8th Army.

@PANDABOIII Actually mate, Omaha was the most heavily defended, a whole division of German troops who should have been withdrawn, weren't I have been there I must say it was a hell of a way to run up to the cliffs with NO cover at all. and the germans had trained there guns to the seas edge at exactly the point where any amphibious force would land,and they did this with German efficiency. Also I visited the American cemetery at the back of Omaha beach They all deserve respect man.

@PANDABOIII You're almost right. Apparently Omaha beach was the most highly defended beach, but Juno, where the Canadians went in, was the second most defended. Of course, by the end of the first day, the Canadians were the ones who had achieved their targets and pushed furthest inland. And you're right on one other score too...we don't make any bullshit movies about it.
