WHY is everyone so judgemental towards Jodi? This revolves around being a DEAF person. My BROTHER is deaf, I know very well how their life is. MANY of you don't know how deaf people live, and how they prefer things, and they can become very frustrated with "hearing" people, because sometime they make them feel like their own little race.
The only one here most of you should be able to relate to is Bette, you can't judge Jodi.
I was just as wrong as her and I'm proud and ,as contradictorilly as it sounds, humble enough to aknowledge that. When one doesn't know what to interprete means, one ends up filtering information and that my friends, manipulates communication even if you mean well. That's why Jodi sais that if she wanted an interpreter she would have brought tom. I know bette meant well but she was just wrong. Jodi should have taken that into consideration as well and educate her rather than yell at her.
Bette is half the time aware of how her acts affect others around her and Jodi is a very observing and independent individual who doesn't take her deafness as a limitation but rather her way of being and identity as a human. Everyone has to struggle to take a place in life and ignorants make it harder for some. It is ALWAYS best that hearing people be educated about the deaf world before getting into a relationship with a deaf person because out of ignorance we can hurt them and get ourselves.
When Ignorance and "uneducated reason" come in through the door, love abd feelings go out through the window. I've been there, done that, and I saw my past self in bette.
no jodie is someone who is on the same level like bette. she´s autonomous like bette, she´s is someone who strike bak to bette and is not in agreement with everything. bette want to control everything, but she can´t control jodie. and that´s something bette can´t handle. jodi is stronger than tina.
Never liked Jodi.Seemed like she always wanted Bette to chase after her.Bette should have dumped her after their first date.Jodi was an arrogant asshole
I don't care for Jodi, but I think she was right. The Bette of old, DID want someone to work for her. We saw this in season 1. It wasn't until season 3 where we saw a change in Bette and how she wanted to approach her relationship as an equal partnership.
I do agree though that Jodie and Bette are two sides of the same coin and do not compliment each other well.
Actually I think the only couple so far this season that do compliment each other is Alice and Tasha.
I don't blame Jodie for being angry b/c Bette assumed she wasn't engaged or involved in the moment. If I were deaf I would have been offended by such a presumption esp. when she already told her that she was enjoying herself. Bette was def. controlling, and she finally got called on it. That's why she and Jodie didn't work out b/c Jodie was not going to put up with her controlling, self-centered mess, point blank.
This segment is really the defining end to Bette & Jodi's relationship. There were always tell-tale signs that they were not ever meant to be a long term couple. I agree with the previous posts that Jodi's character was there to point out to Better herself her faults and frailties. This allowed Bette to better understand herself and realize that Tina would always be her one true love.
I believe that their relationship was so rocky because like Tina said Bette met her match with Jodi. She's not the kind of person who would simply let Bette's bullshit slide. She tells her flat out how she feels and how Bette was acting. She told Bette off knowing very well that Bette didn't want to hear it. I thought their relationship was different, you could tell from the beginning they wouldn't last forever. Bette needed Jodi. She needed someone like her to point the faults.
Your obviously not in a realtionship like they are in...I am hearing, my girlfriend is deaf, she has the same argument with me...marlee matln is deaf/ just the same as her character jodi.
You have to realize that it is insulting to interpret, and control someone...especially when that someone is deaf. The moment u render someone helpless is the moment they loose all faith in u, you have 2 be more sensitive 2 the differences in ur lives...bette was out of line/just as i was in this situation.
Oh, yah I'm definately not in that type of relationship. I'm not saying anything bad, but I don't think I would personally have the patience. I don't know. But I do believe that Bette had her best intentions out there, I don't honestly think that she was intentionally trying to be "controlling", but I'm sure a lot of it was just Bette's really strong personality. And I know that Marlee is deaf. Lol.
Jodi takes her interpreter everywhere... so she can't be deaf and not having someone to help, this scene shows the weakness in Jodi, she is not normal, so she has to accept that fact, i think she was trying to look normal to bette's friends, so they wont compare her to tina. plus Bette was mad because of Tina and Kate, deep inside she is hurt, Tina left her for a man and that was hardly ok, now she shows up with a woman, pure insult to bette and their 8 years together.
Guys I will make this as simple as i possibly can...Deaf People are normal, in fact we shouldnt even conjure up the idea that they are different on less than normal. They communicate just fine, & I think it is us that need to be the ones to adapt., not them. People who are deaf have to be patient with the whole world, & i think when they come home, they should not be met by there lover with opisition & misunderstanding. Dont get urself into that type of relationship if you cant handle it.
I just love Marlee Matlin. Sorry to say she outdid Beals in the performance when they were arguing. No overacting just very realistic. Her timing is perfect.
Bette doesn't belong to Jodi.. And im happy with this scene because they are having problems with each other.. I want Tina & Bette get back together!!!
This scene just shows how uncompatible Jodi is with Bette, both are too headstrong. There was no need for Jodi to scream at Bette. If it were Tina, she would have a more calming effect on Bette, she'll tell Bette the hard truths but in an accepting, non-judgemental, constructive way (we saw this in S1/S2). That's why they belong with each other.
As much as i love Jodi they won't last, Bette needs Tina i'm glad that Jodi put bette in her place though, I'm dreading seeing the scene where Bette and Jodi make out s5 ep 1 i hate seeing Bette with her! ooh Jodi and Helena!
Hmmmm, very interesting. I tend to agree with Bette a lot because I know that it must be hard being with Jodi because of the fact that Jodi hates to be 'tied down'. But then Bette also has control issues....so I don't know. I don't see this relationship going anywhere.

I think Bette and Jodi have great chemistry when they are fighting. I really don't see it in the love scenes- it really seems forced to me.
Their fighting helps Bette and Tina become friends and that leads to ... =)

Two hot heads really don't go together, that's why Jodie and Bette were so uncompatible.
